Raphael Marcel Holzdeppe (born September 28, 1989 in Kaiserslautern ) is a German pole vaulter . His greatest success so far is winning the gold medal at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow . From 2008 to 2017 he was co-owner of the world record for juniors.
biography
Holzdeppe was adopted shortly after his birth, according to other sources, at the age of two. Holzdeppe started pole vaulting at the age of ten. He attended the Helmholtz-Gymnasium Zweibrücken , where he passed the Abitur in 2009 . From the summer of 2010 he studied international management for top athletes via distance learning at the FH Ansbach . He belongs to the LAZ Zweibrücken and was a sports soldier in the sports promotion group Neubiberg of the Bundeswehr before he withdrew from state funding after his world championship title.
Career
On June 28, 2008 he set a junior world record in Biberach with a height of 5.80 m . In doing so, he equalized the junior world record set by the Russian Maxim Tarasov in 1989 . At the Junior World Championships in 2008 in Bydgoszcz , he won the gold medal (5.50 m). At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , he qualified with 5.65 m for the final round and finished eighth.
At the U23 European Championships in Kaunas in 2009 he won the gold medal with 5.65 m. At the World Championships in Daegu he did not make it into the final, with 5.50 m he was eliminated. With 5.77 m he finished second at the German Championships in 2012 . With the same height he won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Helsinki in the same year and thus reached his first podium at international championships in the adult area. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he won the bronze medal with a new personal best of 5.91 m.
In winter 2012/13 he moved from his previous coach Andrei Tivontschik to the Munich training group of Chauncey Johnson with Malte Mohr and Fabian Schulze . On June 6, 2013, Holzdeppe set his best performance at the Diamond League meeting in Rome and defeated the Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie for the first time . He achieved the greatest success of his career so far at the World Championships in Moscow in 2013 , when he was world champion with 5.89 m ahead of Frenchman Lavillenie, who needed more attempts for the same jump height.
At the end of September 2014, Holzdeppe decided to return to his former coach Tivontschik in Zweibrücken. He had previously ended the season early in July due to poor form.
On June 24, 2015, Holzdeppe increased his best performance in a show jumping in Baku to 5.92 m, which he improved to 5.94 m on July 26, 2015 when he won his first German championship title . On August 24, 2015, Holzdeppe won the silver medal at the World Championships in Beijing. Like the winner Shawnacy Barber from Canada, he jumped 5.90 m, but made more failed attempts before.
In 2016, Holzdeppe injured his ankle at the German Indoor Championships in Leipzig in February and only competed again in June. Because of muscular problems he missed the European Championships. At the Olympic Games he failed in qualifying.
In 2017 Holzdeppe became German indoor champion . At the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade he came in 5th place with his first 5.80 meter jump in more than a year and since his severe foot injury. At the 2017 World Championships in London , he failed in the final at the entry height of 5.5 m with three failed attempts.
In 2018, Holzdeppe improved his best performance in the hall on February 3rd at the Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe to 5.88 m and two weeks later won the championship title at the German Indoor Championships in Dortmund with 5.68 m . At the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham , he finished fifth with a jump of 5.80 m.
