The plaque of merit of the city of Darmstadt can be awarded in bronze and in silver by resolution of the magistrate to persons or associations that have distinguished themselves through a political, scientific, artistic, economic or other charitable achievement that has an effect beyond the city's borders have thus made merit for the city of Darmstadt ./> The silver merit plaque is considered the highest award of the city of Darmstadt.

The plaque was designed by Professor Hermann Geibel . Geipel himself interpreted his design as follows: “The front of the plaque, set in an irregular round shape, shows two faces facing each other in profile; a female left, a male right. In between, a delicate laurel rice sprouts up. The female face with almost classic features and a large calm eye symbolizes the muse. The male face represents the creative human being. The laurel beckons to the creator who is inspired in this way and is only just beginning to take root and throw leaves. The back of the plaque bears the inscription "For Merit for Darmstadt" and in the lower half the emblems of the Darmstadt coat of arms lion and lily. "

The forerunner of the Silver Merit Plaque was the Silver Prize Coin, which was introduced in 1917 and had only been awarded four times by 1930. The first holder of the silver merit plaque was Prime Minister a. D. Christian Stock. On August 28, 1954.
