August Buxbaum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

August Buxbaum (born April 14, 1876 in Langenbrombach ; † February 21, 1960 in Darmstadt ) was a German architect and construction clerk who worked in the municipal building administration of Darmstadt from 1904 to 1930 and had a major impact on the Darmstadt cityscape.

Life

August Buxbaum studied architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt . After graduating in 1898, he first worked in Berlin , Nuremberg and Worms . In October 1904 Buxbaum came back to Darmstadt and worked there in the city building department. In 1906 he was appointed town planning inspector and in 1909 town planning officer .

The architecture that was created with his participation or direction can be assigned to the Heimatstil , the Heimatschutzstil or the Reform Style. Today's popular labeling as "Art Nouveau" does not correspond to Buxbaum's self-image, who - like the architecture professors at the Technical University at the time - was critical of the Art Nouveau style of the Darmstadt artists' colony .

In 1930 he left the public service and worked as a freelance architect. Buxbaum was also active as a local researcher with a focus on city and building history.

August Buxbaum died in 1960 at the age of 83. He is buried in the Waldfriedhof Darmstadt (grave site: L 2h 1). His simple grave is to the left of the main entrance in the first row.

A year after his death, a street in the northeast of Darmstadt was dedicated to him by resolution of the magistrate.
