The Darmstadt City Archive is a municipal office in Darmstadt .

history

The city archive was probably founded in the late 16th century as part of an administrative modernization. A chest for storing city bills, documents, court books and the city seal is documented for the year 1565. This chest was initially in the city church . In 1609 the archives were moved to the town hall . A town hall archive is mentioned for the first time in 1688 . In 1705 the name city archive was used for the first time . In the 19th century, the archives were stored in the attic of the town hall.

The city archive has been an independent city department since 1929. At that time the archive was located at Hügelstrasse 26 / corner of Schützenstrasse . During the Second World War , the archive materials were stored in the cellar of the former Ludwigsbahnhof on Steubenplatz . These stocks were largely preserved. The archive building on Hügelstrasse was destroyed in an air raid in 1944.

The holdings that were stored in the town hall and in the Hessian State Archives were largely lost in the air raid. In addition, there are hardly any documents available for the period immediately before 1945, as these were still stored in the administration buildings destroyed during the air raids on Darmstadt. The extensive older registration register, for example, which is an important source for personal research in the second half of the 18th century and contains entries up to approx. 1937, has gaps from the surname beginning with the letter St. The registration cards for the surnames beginning with the letters V to Z were completely destroyed.

After the end of the war, the archives were stored in the attic of the Eleanor School . In 1949 the holdings were handed over to the State Archives . The State Archives was located at that time in the rebuilt Royal Palace . In 1993, an archive statute for the city of Darmstadt was passed, which also places the independence of the Darmstadt City Archives from the supervision of the Hessian State Archives on a legal basis. Since 1994, the once again independent city archive has been located in the House of History together with the State Archive and other archives and historical associations .

Since then, the holdings have been steadily expanded and supplemented with archive material from the municipal offices and offices. Collections from associations, foundations and private individuals are also acquired and stored in the two main stacks in the House of History and two external stacks. In addition, the city archive offers advice to city institutions and civil associations on issues relating to the administration of documents.

The archive has been providing information about its work on a website since 2016. In August 2017, the Arcinsys archive information system was introduced, which can be used to call up information on archive material from the holdings of the city archive. A blog and several social media appearances followed in 2018.
