The Steuben Place is a place in Darmstadt-Mitte and former station square two train stations, considered today green space is used.
The approx. 200 meter long and 40 meter wide area was named after Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben in the early 1930s and was previously part of the Landgraf-Philipps facility .
Today the Darmstadt art gallery is located on the southern edge of the green area . The exhibition building of the Darmstädter Kunstverein was built in 1956/57 according to plans by Theo Pabst . There is also the building of the social court , built from 1986 to 1988 according to plans by Ernst Friedrich Krieger and Lothar Greulich, in place of the two war-torn stations on Steubenplatz .
Until the nationalization of the railways long-distance trains of thought in this central square Main-Neckar Railway in Main Neckar Station . The trains of the Hessian Ludwig Railway held in neighboring railhead Ludwig station . After 1912, authorities were housed in the two reception buildings.
The arrangement of the terminus and through station, which formed a right angle, can still be recognized today by the shape of the Steubenplatz. At first the Kasernenstrasse ran there, which led over the Rheinstrasse to the military properties in Darmstadt-Bessungen . After the end of the war in 1947 and 1948, the Masada Jewish Vocational School for so-called Displaced Persons was located in the less destroyed Main-Neckar train station, under the direction of Samuel Milek Batalion . At first fallow land developed around the ruins .
