Clarins , based in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris, is a formerly listed French cosmetics company that manufactures skin care , make-up and perfume .

Foundation and history

The family business was founded in 1954 by the medical student Jacques Courtin-Clarins in Paris and in 1980 it was number 1 in the field of personal care products in France. The company stands for high quality products that are based exclusively on plant extracts.

In 1974 the founder's son, Christian Courtin-Clarins, joined the company and became export manager of Groupe Clarins, which marked the beginning of international expansion. In January 1981 the first Clarins store opened in the United States. Oliver Courtin-Clarins joined the company in 1990 with the aim of further developing the products and institutes around the world. Clarins quickly becomes number 1 in Europe for exclusive beauty care. In 1991 Clarins launched its first make-up line. In 2002 the company launched the first men's grooming line. In 2008 Clarins launched organic cosmetics for the first time under the name KIBIO, in which it has held a 100% stake since 2010. Today the Clarins Group consists of 19 sales subsidiaries in 150 countries and employs around 6,000 people. Virginie Courtin-Clarins, Claire Courtin-Clarins, Prisca Courtin-Clarins, and Jenna Courtin-Clarins serve as brand ambassadors.

Clarins had been listed on the Paris Stock Exchange since 1984, but the founding family still held the majority; In 2008 the Courtin-Clarins family decided to take the company off the stock exchange by means of a voluntary takeover offer.

Company portfolio

The brand portfolio includes Clarins Clarins, Azzaro , Thierry Mugler and My Blend. A skin care range for men (ClarinsMen) was also launched in 2002. In 2008, further license and partnership agreements were signed with Porsche Design , David Yurman and D. Swarovski . All perfume brands of the Clarins Group are brought together under the Clarins Fragrance Group.

Arthritis Foundation Courtin

In 1989 Jacques Courtin-Clarins opened the Polyarthritis Research Center (ARP) to research the causes of joint diseases such as rheumatism. In 2006, his son Oliver Courtin-Clarins took over the management and established the Arthritis Foundation Courtin. It promotes research into cures for rheumatism and polyarthritis.
