The Porsche license and trading company mbH & Co. KG is a product design company founded in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (FA Porsche) as a Porsche Design Studio in Stuttgart .

The Porsche Design Studio (since 2015 Studio FA Porsche ) has been based in Zell am See , Austria, since 1974 . Studio FA Porsche has been part of the Porsche Design Group (Porsche license and trading company mbH & Co. KG) based in Ludwigsburg (until spring 2014 in Bietigheim-Bissingen ), which in turn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Porsche AG based in Stuttgart, since 2003 is.

history

In 1972, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche - son of Ferry Porsche , grandson of Ferdinand Porsche and cousin of Ferdinand Piëch - founded his own company, the Porsche Design Studio , after the family members were excluded from all important positions at Porsche in Stuttgart . In 1974 he and his company relocated to Zell am See in Austria, where he had lived for several years as a child on the Schüttgut , the headquarters of the Porsche-Piëch families.

In 2003, FA Porsche sold shares in its previously independent design label Porsche Design to a subsidiary of Porsche AG. This ended a confusing chapter in the brand history of Porsche. Since then, there has also been an economic connection between Porsche Design products and the sports car manufacturer. Since then, as a subsidiary of Porsche AG, Studio FA Porsche in Zell am See, which also works for external companies, and thus the brands Porsche Design and Porsche, has belonged to the Porsche Design Group (Porsche license and trading company mbH & Co. KG) based in Ludwigsburg Driver's Selection . Porsche Design has its own regional companies for the USA, China, Great Britain, France and Italy. The former Porsche designer Roland Heiler has been the managing director of Studio FA Porsche since 2004. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche has been Honorary Chairman of the Advisory Board of Studio FA Porsche since then .

In 2015 the Porsche Design Studio changed its name to Studio FA Porsche in memory of its founder Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who died in 2012.

In April 2017, Porsche AG took over the remaining 35 percent of the shares in Porsche license and trading company mbH & Co.KG (Porsche Design Group) from a holding company of the Porsche family with the aim of bringing the lifestyle activities of Porsche Design closer to the Interlocking automotive business. 65 percent of the shares were already in the hands of the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer. The Porsche license and trading company mbH & Co. KG has been a 100 percent subsidiary of Porsche AG since then. Jan Becker, the previous spokesman for the management of the Porsche Design Group, will in future lead the subsidiary as chairman of the management.

In the FA Porsche studio , products are designed and developed that are manufactured under license by other companies and sold under their own brand names. The products are sold worldwide through Porsche Design stores (own and franchise stores), shops-in-shops, better department stores and upscale specialist retailers.

The design studio marketed under the name Design by Studio FA Porsche , mostly in cooperation with leading manufacturers, since the mid-1970s "a variety of industrial products, household appliances and consumer goods". At the same time, under the name Porsche Design, there was a separate range of accessories aimed at male customers (watches, glasses, writing implements, kitchens (by Poggenpohl ) etc.) in the upper price segment. Initially independent of this, since the 1950s, mostly based on individual vehicle models, the sports car manufacturer Porsche's accessories collection, intended for Porsche drivers and friends of the car brand. In 1994 this collection was named Porsche Selection . Since 2004 it has been called the Porsche Design Driver's Selection to differentiate it from the other Porsche Design articles.

In 1995 Porsche Design took over the Swiss watch company Eterna SA in Grenchen . The Porsche Design watch collection is now being manufactured there after the contract with IWC expired at the end of 1997 . The first product from the company's own watch production is a new edition of the Chrono I in the original case shape with a Valjoux 7750 movement.

Products

  • Clothing and shoes (P'1000); high-priced leather clothing and sportswear collection (since 2005, mainly for men, with a small collection for women). The P'1140 blazer received the red dot design award in 2012.
  • Luggage (P'2000); Suitcases , briefcases , travel bags etc.
  • Accessories (P'3000); Writing implements , fragrances , small leather goods ( purses etc.), jewelery ( cufflinks ), cigar accessories , tobacco pipes (including the famous pipe with the cooling fins reminiscent of the cylinders of an air-cooled engine), lighters , pocket knives
  • Exercise (P'5000); Cooperation with adidas under the name Porsche Design Sport with clothing, shoes and accessories for golf , tennis , water sports / snow sports, running / fitness and driving
  • Watches (P'6000)
    • the Chrono I, the design of which was started at Porsche at the time and was intended as an accessory for Porsche drivers. It was manufactured by Orfina SA in Grenchen and came onto the market in 1973. In addition to the original version with a matt black chrome-plated case and stainless steel band, a version with a glass bead-blasted case and stainless steel band was later offered. Initially, the Valjoux 7750 caliber was used, later the Lemania 5100. The version with the Lemania movement, which is very popular for military purposes, was also produced in special versions for various armed forces, each with a different dial and bezel inscription and a case coated in a different color.
    • the compass watch, the first watch from the 20-year collaboration with IWC ( International Watch Company ) in Schaffhausen that began in 1978 . An anti-magnetic automatic movement was combined with a compass . The compass was rotatably mounted in the lower part of the housing and was also removable. The movement was housed in the upper part of the case, which was connected to the lower part via a hinge and could therefore be folded up. The case and strap were made of aluminum and black hard anodized. Later there were versions with a Nato-olive anodized case and strap, and from around the mid-1990s a version made of titanium . The strap could be separated at the clasp. This made it possible to use the exactly 5 mm wide links as a yardstick on maps.
    • the titanium chronograph 1980, the first wristwatch with a case and strap made of titanium. IWC had to develop new production methods for this watch because of the special processing properties of titanium. The case had a cylindrical basic shape into which the pushers for the chronograph mechanism were integrated. Here, too, the widespread ETA Valjoux 7750 was used, but, as is usual at IWC , it has been revised and decorated.
    • the Chrono II, which, like the titanium chrono, had a cylindrical basic shape with integrated pushers. The housing was made of aluminum and the band was made of fiber-reinforced plastic.
    • the Ocean 2000, which was developed with IWC on behalf of the German Navy. Its case and strap were made of titanium. It was designed to be pressure-resistant up to a water depth of 2000 m.
    • Today's models are based on ETA movements.
    • the Huawei Watch Porsche Design as a smartwatch.
  • Home articles (P'7000); Lights , kitchen knives , kitchen furniture
    • Multihammer P7911; Rotary hammer in Porsche Design in cooperation with the tool manufacturer Metabo
  • Glasses (P'8000); Prescription frames, reading glasses and sunglasses are available. Today, Porsche Design glasses are designed and manufactured at Rodenstock .
    • The P'8478 model with its teardrop-shaped lenses and the quick-release fastener for changing lenses, which was first introduced in 1978, is very well known. For the company's 40th anniversary in 2012, a limited edition P'8478 40Y was released.
    • In 1979 the so-called "Yoko Ono" P'8479 made of beta titanium was introduced, which was worn by Yoko Ono on various LP and magazine covers.
    • The titanium pilot glasses P'8480, presented in 1980, can be folded up to six by six centimeters in just a few simple steps and, thanks to the material, are particularly light and corrosion-resistant.
    • In 2006 the P'8418 was launched as the first interchangeable lens sunglasses with self-locking lenses.
    • One of the glasses designed by Porsche's design studio, for example, had its shape because it was supposed to be cast from titanium and of course the casting process had to be taken into account in the shape. It was later not made in titanium, but retained the shape it was designed for.
    • The first sunglasses milled from one piece of titanium were presented in 2010.
    • In 2012 a limited to 1,972 pieces “40 Years of Innovation” collector's box with four highlight models made of sandblasted titanium, based on the design icons from 1978, 1980, 2006 and 2010, was launched.
  • Electronics (P'9000)

Furthermore, products were and are designed on behalf of well-known customers. These are also sold as Porsche Design products (P'XXXX), but bear a reference to the manufacturer (e.g. Adidas , Faber-Castell etc.):

For some designs, either no reference was made to the designer at all or he was only mentioned in the product advertising, e.g. B .:
