LaCie, SA , based in Paris, is a French manufacturer of computer accessories such as hard drives , RAID systems, optical drives and computer screens. With devices with high color fidelity, the screen division primarily targets customers in the field of professional image processing, especially printing companies. In 2012, Seagate Technology acquired a majority stake in LaCie, which was then still listed on the NYSE Euronext in Paris. In mid-December 2013, the Seagate Group also took over the remaining shares through a squeeze-out and took the company off the stock exchange.
history
The company was founded in 1995 through the merger of the American La Cie in Portland , Oregon and the French électronique d2 in Paris and has been operating under the name LaCie since 1998 .
The American part of the company was founded in July 1987 by Robert and Tudy Kamerman and Roger Bates as La Cie, Ltd. founded in Tigard , Oregon. Joel Kamerman, the son of the founding couple, took over as President and CEO. In December 1990, Plus Developement, a subsidiary of the hard drive manufacturer Quantum Corporation, bought the young company and helped it develop into a licensed supplier of external SCSI drives for Apple under the leadership of Joel Kamerman .
In 1989, Pierre Fournier and Philippe Spruch founded électronique d2 . At first they just put hard drives in SCSI housings in their apartment to sell as external peripheral devices. By 1990 the company had grown rapidly, invested in research and developed its own products. A year later it opened offices in London , Brussels and Copenhagen . In 1995 it was possible to buy out the US company La Cie from the Quantum Group, thereby creating a foothold in America.
In December 2009, LaCie took over the software manufacturer Caleido with its distributed storage application Wuala . In November 2011, LaCie announced that it had acquired an 11.17% stake in the German television manufacturer Loewe . After its capital cut in October 2013, the share was only 2.87%.
In May 2012, the American manufacturer Seagate Technology announced that it would acquire a majority stake in the company's capital at a valuation of € 146 million. After the company founders acquired the majority of the shares, a public offer was launched to the remaining shareholders at the end of September 2012. At the end of the offer, Seagate held 94.85% of the capital. In December 2013, Seagate also secured the remaining shares through a squeeze-out and took the company, which had previously been listed on the NYSE Euronext and represented in the CAC Small index , off the stock exchange on December 19.
Products
The core business was initially the manufacture of external SCSI hard drives. Over the years, CD and DVD drives and burners, as well as magneto-optical systems, SyQuest drives, streamers and data storage devices with USB or FireWire connections have been added. Screens are also part of the product range today.
In addition, NAS operating systems, backup software and cloud storage were offered through the Wuala brand until 2015 .
design
In view of the fact that the target group was initially Apple Macintosh customers, LaCie and its predecessor companies each commissioned professional designers to design their products. In 1991, Philippe Starck worked for électronique d2 in Paris and designed the K1 , Apollo and Tokyo drives , which, with their hand-brushed aluminum, were reminiscent of the shiny chrome toasters of the 1950s and were therefore nicknamed toaster drives . Industrial designers Neil Poulton and Christophe Pillet managed the relevant projects as Starck's employees. Both worked for LaCie several times after their separation from Starck.
From 2003 to 2006, Porsche Design designed a range of products for LaCie. Colorful cases by Karim Rashid and the Brick drive by Ora-ito followed in 2006 .
In 2007, the Center Georges Pompidou acquired a number of LaCie products for its collection, including Poultons Le Coq , d2 , LBD , Firewire Speakers , Pocketdrive and Rugged , Ito's Brick and USB Hub, and two Porsche-designed drives.
At the beginning of 2014, LaCie presented the LaCie Christofle Sphere at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas , a spherical external storage solution that was created in cooperation with the design studio of the French manufacturer of fine silverware Christofle .
