Karim Rashid
Karim Rashid (born September 18, 1960 in Cairo ) is an American designer . He is considered the "pop star of the design world".
Life
Karim Rashid, the son of Egyptian-English parents, grew up in Canada. He studied industrial design at Carleton University in Ottawa . After completing his bachelor's degree in 1982, he completed postgraduate studies with Ettore Sottsass and internships with Rodolfo Bonetto and KAN Design. He has been running his own design studios in New York City and Rotterdam since 1993 and is active worldwide. In Germany, Rashid is particularly known for the design of the prizeotel hotel chain.
Rashid was Associate Professor of Industrial Design for 10 years and is now a frequent visiting professor at international universities and at conferences around the world. In 2005 he received an honorary doctorate from the Corcoran College of Art and Design (CCAD) in Washington DC and in 2006 an honorary doctorate from the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) in Toronto.
Rashid celebrated his international breakthrough in 1996 with the plastic waste paper basket "Garbo Can". He has designed and implemented a total of over 3,000 designs and objects and has received over 300 design awards. His work is exhibited in all major museums around the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris . He calls his style "blobism" - the world as a bubble.
In 2001 he published the monograph "I Want to Change the World" - his offensive motto and manifesto.
Rashid has been married to the Serbian chemist Ivana Puric since 2008. His brother is the architect Hani Rashid ( Asymptote Architecture ).
