Rodolfo Bonetto

Rodolfo Bonetto (born September 18, 1929 in Milan , † 1991 ibid) was an Italian designer.

life and work

He came to design autodidactically. From 1949 to 1975 Bonetto worked internationally as a jazz drummer and founded a design studio in 1958.

He saw his focus in the area of ​​permanent consumer goods. His designs found their way into electrical appliances and sanitary facilities, into cars or musical instruments as well as into radios or the instrumentation of aircraft. Well-known designs are the Sfericlock alarm clock from 1962 for Fratelli Borletti, SpA and the Boomerang Lounge chair, which he designed for Flexform in 1968.

V. Gregotti called him an ["... educated worker"] because he knew how to combine his knowledge of production technologies and materials with the aspects of ergonomics and a correct study of form.

In the years 1961–1965 he was also a lecturer at the Ulm School of Design and was awarded the Compasso d'Oro six times . Among other things, the award was given for

  • the Sfericlock alarm clock ( Veglia Borletti , 1963)
  • the machine tool with numerical control OCN (Olivetti, 1967)
  • the automatic microfilming machine (BCM, 1970)
  • the interior design for the Fiat 131 Mirafiori (Fiat, 1978)
  • posthumously he received the Compasso d'Oro again in 1991 for his complete works

In his activity he works a. a. for Brionvega , Driade and Siemens . For Olivetti , he and Naoki Matsunaga planned the Horizon 2 manufacturing center for Olivetti in the years 1972–75 and in 1989 the public telephone Rotor for the Italian telephone company Sip.

He was a member of Italian and international juries and, between 1981 and 1983, President of the Icsid design institution . His work is continued today by the Bonetto Design studio. His son Marco Bonetto is in charge here. In 1994 he founded the Bonetto Design Center in Montecarlo in memory of his father.

Bonetto was one of the few Italian designers who did not complete an architecture degree and did not realize any architectural projects.
