Writing implements
Writing implements are used to write , to apply characters to a surface. Depending on how they are used, writing implements can also be used more or less well for drawing and painting .
Old writing implements
The appearance of writing implements is closely related to the shape of the writing , the surface on which it is written and the cultural sense of aesthetics.
To write in cuneiform on clay tablets , the Babylonians used a stylus with a triangular tip, with which they pressed the characters in soft clay. This resulted in good legibility of the writing on the clay. In many places (e.g. in ancient Egypt) people wrote with a pen made of reeds. The modern Arabic word for pen qalam is still derived from the Latin word calamus (= reed).
The Romans used pen to on wax tablets to write. However, papyrus from Egypt was also used. Later, quills used. Suitable bird feathers usually come from the wings of geese and ravens. Calligraphers still use such nibs. Pencils were developed in the 16th century and took different forms.
