The Metabowerke GmbH , headquartered in Baden-Württemberg Nürtingen is a manufacturer of power tools . The company was founded in the 1920s. The name derives from " Meta ll bo from hrdreher", a hand drill . Today Metabo belongs to Hitachi Koki and offers a wide range of power tools.
history
In 1923 Albrecht Schnizler built the first hand drill in Nürtingen in his parents' bakery . The machine was named No. 18 sold over 50,000 times, Schnizler GmbH was founded in 1924. Co-founder was Julius Closs, owner of the former sun brewery in Nürtingen. The company moved into the building of the Sonnenbrauerei in Kirchstrasse, which had emerged from the former Nürtingen Reiterkaserne. In 1927 Walter Rauch became sales manager. With the establishment of "Metabowerk GmbH" in 1932 he became a partner.
During the Second World War, 16 female forced laborers had to work for metabo, including women from Poland.
In the late autumn of 1945, 75 percent of the factory, which was only insignificantly damaged during the war, burned down and was rebuilt by 1948.
The rapid growth of the company made it necessary to relocate the company headquarters. In 1953 Metabo therefore started building a new plant in the Steinach industrial area. In 1969, with the completion of the new administration building, the relocation of the company to its current location was finally completed.
In 1999, the Metabogroup began to reorganize, and the Elektra Beckum company in Meppen was taken over. In 2004 Metabo reorganized its production facilities and the plant in Shanghai was opened. In 2006 Elektra Beckum was completely absorbed by Metabo. In 2010, the reorganization of the production facilities was completed with the sale of the Meppen plant.
The company today
After the restructuring phase, Metabo would like to concentrate on the core target groups of the metal trade and industry as well as the building trade and renovation. Today, Metabo is a medium-sized company that, in addition to its headquarters in Nürtingen, also produces in Shanghai , China . The company has 23 sales companies and more than 100 importers. The company's export quota was 80% in 2016.
Metabo was majority owned by the French private equity fund Checkers Capital until November 2015, after the founding families sold their shares in 2012. In November 2015 Metabo was sold to the Japanese company Hitachi Koki .
Almost 2,000 people work for Metabo worldwide, 1,200 of them in the main plant in Nürtingen. In 2018, the company generated sales of 493 million euros.
