Accessory in art

Accessories ( Greek: Parergon) are used in works of fine arts to describe all objects that are not necessary to represent the main object.

In the opinion of art historians , the accessory must be selected according to the nature of the time or the place of the action to describe the same more precisely, therefore to better understand and characterize the incidental circumstances, as well as to perform and fill in the artistic representation. In doing so, the main effect of the work must not be disturbed , although the accessory makes it appear richer and more varied.

In the sculptural relief , the accessory should be limited as possible according to the Greek style order, and in statuary art it should only be used with moderation. The allegorizing art, on the other hand, has practically placed the focus on the accessory.

Accessory in literature

In the narrower sense, the term accessory means representations of inanimate objects to decorate a scene, to designate the location and to determine the temporal relationships, for example the furniture, equipment, fabrics etc. in the epic , in In tragedy and in the novel, the episodes, descriptions of nature and places, i.e. the local color , can be seen as accessories.
