Architecture and history

The oldest Darmstadt town hall was first mentioned in 1397 as the Spielhus . It was on the north side of Darmstadt's market square in a building block that was later demolished.

In the years 1566–1569 a new town hall with a stone substructure and half-timbered floors was built on the south side of the market square . In the years 1598–1601 a new, completely stone town hall was built on the same site. After an exterior renovation in 1914, the old town hall was completely renewed inside in 1926/27. The wooden beams of the roof structure were replaced by steel beams. The old town hall was inaugurated on August 4, 1927. The city council meeting room was on the second floor; the gallery on the third floor. In addition, the registry office and the local court were housed in the building. The shops on the ground floor of the old town hall were run by the Ratskeller restaurant replaced.

The old town hall was badly damaged in an air raid in 1944 . The Ratskeller resumed operations in 1948 - under an emergency roof. In 1954/55 the old town hall was completely rebuilt. The building was given arcades on the west side . The rebuilt old town hall was inaugurated on June 29, 1955.

In 2003, an outside elevator was added to the rear of the Old Town Hall.
