The market square is a square in the center of Darmstadt . Right next to the Residenzschloss , it is the central square in the historic city center.

History and design of the square

The market square is probably the oldest square in Darmstadt. It was built between the residential palace and the town church in the 13th or 14th century. In the oldest sources it is called a plan (flat surface). Darmstadt's weekly and annual markets have been held on the market square since 1330. For centuries, the market square was the center of business life in the city and the surrounding area. Market supervision was originally carried out by the mayor. A municipal market master was first mentioned in 1566. The medieval buildings on the market square are not known. The place was much smaller than it is today. Between the residential palace and the market square there was another building block in which Darmstadt's oldest town hall, first mentioned in 1397, was located. This block was completely removed between 1584 and 1640.

In the years 1566–68 a new town hall was built on the south side of the market square. This town hall was replaced in the years 1598–1601 by the building that has been preserved to this day. As a result, representative aristocratic and civil servants' houses were built on the east and west sides. In the early 19th century, the city center moved to the newly built Luisenplatz ; the marketplace lost its importance. The electric tram has been running through Kirchstrasse since 1897 . From the end of the 19th century, the aristocratic palaces were converted into commercial and residential buildings.

The development on the edge of the market square was destroyed by Allied air raids in 1944; only the market fountain remained. After the Second World War, a new building was built on the market square, only the residential palace and the town hall were rebuilt in their historical form. In the years 1996-97 the market place was paved again. By withdrawing the building line on the east side in the 1950s and including Kirchstrasse , it reached the largest extent in its history. In 2005 the tram and bus stop Schloss was relocated to the north side of the market square. In 2015, the row of houses on the east side was placed under monument protection.

traffic

The market square is part of the pedestrian zone and a central hub for Darmstadt's local transport . Today it is served by three of the nine lines of the Darmstadt tram and various bus routes.

Events

The regular events that take place on the square include a. the Heinerfest in July and from November the Darmstadtädter Christmas market. The weekly market takes place on the market square every Wednesday and Saturday. In the summer months, Datterich's weekly market occasionally supplements this with numerous promotions.
