The Henschel department store (formerly Rothschild department store ) is a building in Darmstadt .

Architecture and history

The part of the then Rothschild department store facing the market square was built in 1908 and 1913–1914 according to plans by the architects Georg Küchler and Georg Wickop . The client was the textile merchant Siegmund Rothschild. The grid facade made of yellow sandstone was preserved. The back ground floor has arcades . The first floor was raised. The cornice between the second and lower third floors was originally the cornice of the high mansard roof . The vertical structure of the facade is created by the windows and the slightly protruding pilaster strips , which are continued in the pillars of the arcades. The transition from the pilaster strips to the pillars of the arcades is emphasized by reliefs .

In an air raid in 1944, the building was destroyed except for the facade facing the market square. Between 1946 and 1956, the department store was rebuilt according to plans by the architect Peter Müller (1881–1960).

In the 1990s, the building was enlarged by expanding the fourth floor and adding the fifth floor.

In 2001 the interior of the building was renovated. Another renovation and modernization of the building took place in the 2010s.
