History and description

In 1897, Siegmund Rothschild (1870–1940) acquired the former "Mecklenburg Palace" on Darmstadt's market square . Between 1907 and 1929 Rothschild bought several neighboring buildings. These acquisitions were partially demolished and replaced by a new building. In the 1930s, the department store complex between Marktplatz and Ernst-Ludwigs-Platz had reached its present size.

In 1936 Rothschild sold his property to the Henschel GmbH founded in 1935 by Erich Henschel (1901–1970) and Hans Ropertz (1901–1956). In 1944 the department store was partially destroyed in an air raid. In 1945 Rothschild's widow became a partner in Henschel GmbH. The reconstruction took place between 1945 and 1956. The department store has been rebuilt several times over the past few decades.
