Local transport in Darmstadt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The history of local public transport in Darmstadt begins with the Darmstadt steam tram , which was soon followed by the establishment of a city tram. It was not until the two companies merged to form Hessische Eisenbahn-Aktiengesellschaft (HEAG) in 1912 that the company came under one roof. Bus traffic began in 1927.

Several tram and bus routes operated by HEAG mobilo GmbH and other transport companies operate in Darmstadt today . They can be used with uniform prices within the Rhein-Main transport association . Local transport is organized and planned by the Darmstadt-Dieburger local transport organization (DADINA) . DADINA orders the transport services from the individual companies.

Since 1846 the Main-Neckar-Eisenbahn Darmstadt has been connected to the railway network with connections to Frankfurt am Main , Mannheim and Heidelberg . The development of the Darmstadt area by rail began with the meter-gauge Darmstadt steam tram, which was opened in 1886 and was built and operated by the consortium Bank for Trade and Industry - Herrmann Bachstein . After the two routes from Darmstadt to Griesheim and Eberstadt opened in 1886, a third route to Arheilgen followed in 1890 . In 1895, Herrmann Bachstein brought the Darmstadt steam tram along with a number of other railway companies to the Süddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft AG (SEG) , which now took over operations. For details see: Tram Darmstadt

Foundation of the Darmstadt municipal tram

Because inner-city traffic was inadequately served by the steam trains, the city council decided in 1895 to build and operate an electric city tram , the two lines of which, Böllenfalltor - Alte Bahnhöfe (White Line) and Hermannstraße - Taunusstraße (Blue Line), went into operation in 1897. The operator of these routes was initially Siemens & Halske , and in November 1898 the city took over both routes. In 1903 the new route from Schloss to Saalbaustraße (Green Line) followed.

Foundation of HEAG enables uniform operation

In the following years there were repeated plans to expand the route network, but the city and the SEG often blocked each other. Following the example of the Upper Rhine Railway Company (OEG) founded in Mannheim in 1911, after tough negotiations, the city of Darmstadt and the SEG finally agreed in January 1912 to merge their competing operations into a joint stock company , which on April 15, 1912 became the Hessische Eisenbahn-Aktiengesellschaft (HEAG) was founded. The SEG brought its steam tram and the city of Darmstadt the electric trams and its power station into HEAG.

The route network has been steadily expanded under HEAG. This was followed by the electrification of the entire tram network, and steam trams stopped operating in 1922. At the same time, HEAG pushed the expansion of the power grid. The first bus routes were set up in 1927 and trolleybuses also existed between 1944 and 1963 . Today, after several name changes, HEAG mobiTram GmbH is the operator.

The Heag-mobiTram operates 9 tram lines in the local transport network. The line network is divided into 3 sections. Section one is only used by line 3. Section two is used by lines 1,6,7 and 8 and section three is used by lines 2,4,5,9.

Lines 1, 2 and 4 are used as amplifiers. Lines 6 and 8 form a special unit. They run in the same formation. Line 6 runs from morning to evening during the week, although it does not go to all stations between DA-Luisenplatz and Eberstadt-waiting hall in order to shorten the journey time by approx. 5 minutes. Line 8 during the week in the early evening and morning hours and on the weekend. There are considerations to delete line 6 from the network and to replace it completely with line 8, as the dense frequency of the lines on the route to Eberstadt makes it difficult to shorten travel times.

  • Line 1 runs between Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof and Eberstadt Frankenstein.
  • Line 2 runs between Darmstadt Böllenfalltor and Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof.
  • Line 3 runs between Darmstadt Lichtenbergschule and Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof.
  • Line 4 runs between Kranichstein Bahnhof and Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof.
  • Line 5 runs between Kranichstein Bahnhof and Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof.
  • Line 6/8 run between Arheilgen-Dreieichweg and Alsbach Am Hinkelstein.
  • Line 7 runs between Arheilgen-Dreiechweg and Eberstadt Frankenstein.
  • Line 9 runs between Darmstadt Böllenfalltor and Griesheim Platz Bar le Duc.

With the exception of line 1, all lines drive at the central transfer point Luisenplatz, where you can transfer to most of the city bus and regional bus lines.

History bus

Line chronicle

Inside view of a MAN A21 on line A.

Due to the steadily increasing traffic to Kranichstein , the 1980s began to reinforce the H bus line with additional trips. These trips were later given a fixed timetable and the line designation HE (depending on the vehicle signs also with a superscript E; older vehicles of the type O305G had no destination signs " Hauptbahnhof ", these vehicles then ran with the signs "H Einsatzwagen" and a sign "Hauptbahnhof") . The HE line ran in the mornings and afternoons in the peak of traffic between Kranichstein / Parkstrasse to Berliner Allee parallel to line H, but then turned to the main station and ended there. For lunchtime school traffic, some HE trips only ran between Luisenplatz and Kranichstein and only in this direction of travel.

In November 1989 the lines HE and I (Holzhofallee-Kleyerstraße) were given up in favor of a new line K. Line K ran between Kranichstein / Parkstrasse and Berliner Allee parallel to line H and from there continued on its own to Kleyerstrasse. Line K service hours have been extended. It now ran from the start of operations until around 9 a.m. and from 12 p.m. to around 7 p.m. As the number of passengers continued to increase, the gap was closed in the morning. In order to relieve the Parkstrasse terminus, the terminus of line K was later relocated to the Kranichsteiner Bahnhof, again a few years later a new route was implemented from Parkstrasse to a new Jaupstrasse terminus.

The situation in Kranichstein remained unsatisfactory on Saturdays. Therefore, an SK line was put into operation as a high-speed line between Kranichstein and the castle with minimal use of vehicles. It initially drove in Kranichstein depending on the load direction, ie at the beginning of the shopping time from Darmstadt via Jägertorstraße and from there back to the city with service to the Kranichsteiner stops, towards the end of the shopping time in the opposite direction. Only later was a uniform route in both directions introduced, and all stops in Darmstadt served (originally only Taunusplatz).

In 1991 there was a restructuring of traffic in the lower Odenwald. Line M (Böllenfalltor-Eberstadt via Nieder-Ramstadt) was replaced in the section between Böllenfalltor and Nieder-Ramstadt by line K53 (Böllenfalltor - Nieder-Ramstadt - Frankenhausen - Neutsch), and in the section between Nieder-Ramstadt and Eberstadt by an extended line N. The section to Eberstadt was also subject to several changes, originally line M turned from Kühler Grund directly to Eberstadt (via the swimming pool), later the route via the bypass road and the access road at the Eberstädter Klinikum was changed.

In 2006 there was another restructuring. Line N was shortened to the Darmstadt - Nieder-Ramstadt section. Line K53 has been renamed NE and runs every 30 minutes. However, this cycle only applies to Nieder-Ramstadt, since every second journey from there turns off to Eberstadt and turns there. Since then, buses on the NE line have been running again via the swimming pool stop in Eberstadt.

With the 1993 timetable change, traffic in Pfungstadt was reorganized. The previous diameter line P (Eberstadt-Pfungstadt / Neumühle) was merged with the line PI (Ringverkehr Pfungstadt). Since then, line P has been running a ring from Eberstadt via Pfungstädter Bahnhof via the southern and northern Pfungstadt back to the train station (and, for reasons of space at the train station, it has been a few years later to turn to "Am Mühlberg").

After reconstruction of the station (due to the restart of the Pfungstadtbahn ), line P has been turning back at the station since 2012. Since then this has been running every hour (Mon-Fri) as PE and makes a detour via Eich and Eschollbrücken. (The other buses continue to run as P.)

Before the opening of the tram route to Kranichstein in 2003, line H went to Parkstrasse (block bypass counterclockwise through “An der Schleifmühle”, “Parkstrasse” and “Jägertorstrasse”) via Borsdorffstrasse, line K to Jaupstrasse (block bypass clockwise through “An der Schleifmühle "," Parkstraße "," Jaupstraße "," Institutszentrum "), line L from Nordbad to TU Lichtwiese. The Ostbahnhof was connected with a line D, which in 1986 took over the route of the tram line 4 Hauptbahnhof – Ostbahnhof. With the opening of the tram route to Kranichstein, line D was discontinued. Since then, the Ostbahnhof has been connected to the L line, which runs the historic route of tram line 5. Line K goes to Lichtwiese, which was moved from Rheinstraße to Bismarckstraße with this change. Line H got a new terminus Kesselhutweg in Kranichstein, which is only served every 30 minutes. The 15-minute cycle ends at the “Am Karlshof” station, and every second bus goes from there to Alfred-Messel-Weg.

Since December 9, 2012, line L has only been running between Luisenplatz and Heinheimer Straße for economic reasons. The regional bus routes offer a replacement.

Ticket machines

In all buses there are ticket machines at the front of the driver , when the type O 405 N has been decommissioned, there is no longer a bus that has a machine in the central area. Until the turn of the year 2014/15, ticket machines were installed in the first quarter of the tram and in the sidecar at the level of the middle door. The machines from 2002 could only accept coins and not banknotes or EC cards. In addition, it was no longer possible to display the entire RMV tariff. The machines in the bus and train were operated using buttons, the stationary machines (see picture) at many stops were operated using a touchscreen .
