Location of Kranichstein within Darmstadt

Kranichstein is a district of the city of Darmstadt .
The part of Kranichstein, which was created from the 1960s onwards through the large-scale construction of housing estates, was initially regarded as a so-called satellite town due to its spatial demarcation from the core city . Today, this urban character is no longer as distinctive as it was in the early phase of Neu-Kranichstein due to the increasing merging with the districts of Arheilgen and the composer's quarter . Initially, the appearance was largely determined by residential high-rise buildings. In the meantime, however, Kranichstein has been shaped by many different architectural styles, in addition to high-rise buildings, above all by bungalow settlements , single-family houses as well as residential and new building areas with model building complexes and terraced houses in low-energy or passive house construction .
Geographical location
Kranichstein is in the east of Darmstadt. It borders in the north on Darmstadt-Wixhausen , in the southeast on Darmstadt-Ost , in the southwest on Darmstadt-Nord and in the west on Darmstadt-Arheilgen .
history
The prehistoric history is certainly to be seen as the same due to the close geographical location to Arheilgen.
middle Ages
On May 6, 1399 , the first mention of the Einsiedel-Rod on Messeler Weg appeared, which was later named after its owner Henne Cranich zu Dirmstein Kranich-Rod or Kranich-Rotth , derived from a clearing .
Modern times
In May 1968 the urban development project “Neu-Kranichstein”, which was relatively large for Darmstadt, was started; the designs came from Ernst May . The design envisaged an urban expansion for 18,000 residents in the form of a forest satellite. Of the four planned construction phases, only the smallest was initially implemented. As a result of the economic crisis, the demand for apartments fell, so that the concept aimed at growth was no longer pursued. It is named after the nearby hunting lodge, the former summer residence of the Darmstadt landgraves and grand dukes. The overall planning included the construction of the public park with artificial hills and several ponds, which were created in the former clay pits, as well as the Brentano lake.
Until the 1980s, the new, artificially created district was considered a social hotspot and thus a failure (similar to a smaller high-rise estate in Darmstadt-Eberstadt) due to its high-rise buildings and rather one-sided social stratification. This assessment did not take into account the fact that on both sides of the then centrally located Bartningstrasse all high-rise apartments were rented to employees and officials of Darmstadt state-owned companies (e.g. Bundespost, Telekom, Deutsche Bahn).
Due to numerous urban changes and new building areas for different types of settlement, Kranichstein is today a well-mixed and multicultural district with a wide social structure, which has a language and cultural diversity that hardly any other part of Darmstadt has to offer: around 20% of the inhabitants are of foreign origin come from more than eighty nations.
The precarious economic situation of foreign residents in particular forms the breeding ground for social problems; however, these are addressed in a variety of initiatives. The inclusion in the “Socially Integrative City” funding program resulted in numerous projects to improve the living environment, in the development and implementation of which the residents were involved. In this way, Kranichstein has gradually developed into a lively, urban district. It has a district library, four kindergartens, a forest kindergarten, two day-care centers and a daycare center. The Erich Kästner School has been functioning as an integrated comprehensive school since 1996.
traffic
