Kranichsteiner Music Prize
The Kranichsteiner Music Prize is an internationally renowned music prize . It was donated in 1952 by the city of Darmstadt (Kranichsteiner Musikinstitut, today: Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt ) on the occasion of the International Summer Courses for New Music with the support of the State of Hesse . The name goes back to the Darmstadt district of Kranichstein . It was initially considered the only prize for interpretations of contemporary music in Germany. In 1976 the awarding of the prizes was changed to a biennial cycle.
Until 1969, the prize was awarded to new music interpreters of several different instruments (violin, flute, clarinet, violoncello, percussion) and chamber music , with the piano being advertised every year. Since 1972 the prize has been divided into a diverse interpretation prize and a newly added composition prize and no longer takes place as a music competition , but is awarded as a bonus. Previously, with a few exceptions, so-called “public final auditions” were held at the end of the competitions, with premieres and first performances on a regular basis . In 1952 the compulsory pieces included modern compositions from the first half of the 20th century and the like. a. Béla Bartók , Claude Debussy , Paul Hindemith , Darius Milhaud and Arnold Schönberg . In 1959 the canon was supplemented with more recent works by Edgar Varèse , Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez .
He is currently at 6,000 euros, i.e. H. 3,000 euros for performers (ensemble or soloist) and 3,000 euros for composers. Scholarships have also been awarded since 1982 . The independent jury is made up of lecturers from the respective holiday courses. In 2016 these were Joanna Bailie , Thorbjørn Tønder Hansen and Eva Zöllner .
