Robert HP Platz (* 1951 in Baden-Baden ) is a German composer and conductor .

Life

Starting in 1970, Platz studied music theory, piano and conducting at the Freiburg University of Music . He then studied composition with Wolfgang Fortner and Elmar Budde . He also studied parapsychology with Hans Bender for a while . In 1973, Platz moved to the Cologne University of Music and studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen . He completed the conductor training he began in Freiburg with Francis Travis .

From 1978 onwards, Platz was a scholarship holder of the Heinrich Strobel Foundation of Südwestrundfunk . As a result, he lived for a considerable time in the USA and Paris . In 1980, Platz attended a computer course for composers at the IRCAM (Research Institute for Acoustics / Music) in Paris. The tape he made there became part of his work Chlebnicov (for chamber ensemble and tape ), composed in 1981 and premiered in 1981 during the festival of the International Society for New Music (IGNM) in Brussels .

In 1980, Platz founded the Ensemble Köln , which was dedicated to the interpretation of contemporary music. This ensemble, for which Clarence Barlow , Mauricio Kagel , Giacinto Scelsi and Iannis Xenakis composed, among others , led Platz until its dissolution in 2001. In addition, Platz worked as a guest conductor with the Ensemble Modern , the WDR Radio Symphony Orchestra and the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden- Baden and Freiburg . Platz lived on the Künstlerhof Schreyahn in 1989/1990 and spent several weeks in the USA as composer in residence at the invitation of the Rockefeller Foundation in 1990 . This was followed by lecturing and teaching assignments as well as stays in Japan , the Netherlands , Poland and the USA. Platz took part as a lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer Courses and worked as a conductor at the music festivals Musica, Strasbourg, Rencontres Internationales, Metz, Holland Festival, Salzburg Festival and MUSIC TODAY in Tokyo.

Platz has taught composition at the Maastricht Conservatory since 1990 . In 2000 he took over the artistic direction of the Schreyahner Herbst festival . Since 2005 Robert HP Platz has also been a member of the board of directors of the Liège electronic studio (Bureau du Directeur des Center de Recherches et Formation Musicales de Wallonie / CRFMW).

Platz has been teaching at the University of Music in Würzburg since 2013 .
