Gerald Eckert

Gerald Eckert (born December 27, 1960 in Nuremberg ) is a German composer , cellist and painter who lives in Eckernförde .

biography

Gerald Eckert studied physics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 1983 to 1984 , before studying cello, piano and conducting at the Nuremberg Conservatory from 1985 to 1990 . From 1987 to 1992 he studied mathematics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, and since 1989 composition with Wilfried Jentzsch . This was followed by composition studies with Walter Zimmermann at the Folkwang University in the Ruhr area and from 1992 to 1995 he studied at the Folkwang University in Essen, where he studied composition with Nicolaus A. Huber and electroacoustic composition with Dirk Reith . He also took part in various composition courses with James Dillon , Brian Ferneyhough and Jonathan Harvey .

In 1996/97 he worked and researched at the CCRMA ( Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics ) at Stanford University, California / USA. In 1998 he was a lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music and at the International Festival & Seminar in Akiyoshidai / Japan. In 2000/01 a teaching position for composition and architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt followed .

In 2000 he realized the dance project “Poesie” with Diane Neiman and the Ensemble Horizonte, and that year he also received a scholarship at the Schleswig-Holstein artist house in Eckernförde . In 2006 he was composer in residence at the Zurich Days for New Music. In 2008 he realized a project for the New Music Network in collaboration with the Berlin Academy of the Arts and the State of Brandenburg, together with the choreographer Kathinka Walter . In 2011 he realized the dance project “Gegenüber 2” together with the choreographer / dancer Mikael Honesseau .

Since 1989 he has also been working on his own pictures and has realized various exhibitions and installations since 1994. Catalogs appeared in 1995, 2006 and 2007.

Gerald Eckert is co-initiator of the “Chiffren” festival in Kiel 2006 and the “ProvinzLärm” festival in Eckernförde in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.

Since 2012 he has held a professorship for composition at the Chung-Ang University in Seoul - Anseong / South Korea.

Eckert's works are published by Edition Gravis .

Prices (selection)

In 1993 Eckert received a prize at the Luigi Russolo competition in Italy as well as the “C. Gulbenkian Prize ”in Portugal. In 1996 he was awarded the Kranichstein Music Prize.

In 2003 he was awarded a prize (honorable mention) at the “Salvatore Martirano Competition” in the USA as well as first prize at the 30th International Competition Bourges 2003 in France and first prize at the 3rd international composer competition “Elisabeth Schneider Prize " in Freiburg. In 2005 he received a scholarship from the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and the first prize of the 50th Stuttgart Composition Prize 2005. In 2006 he received a scholarship for Venice , Künstlerhof Schreyahn 2009, Villa Aurora Los Angeles 2010, Villa Serpentara / Rome (Olevano Romano) 2010 and that Künstlerhaus Lukas Ahrenshoop 2013.
