Dirk Reith
Dirk Reith (born June 26, 1947 ) is a German composer and musicologist. He is Professor of Composition at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and a founding member of the GNMR (Society for New Music Ruhr eV).
Musical career
Dirk Reith studied composition at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf with Milko Kelemen , while completing a degree in sound engineering . From 1974 to 1976 he studied computer composition at the Institute of Sonology at the University of Utrecht with Gottfried Michael Koenig . At the beginning of the 1970s he began to set up the electronic studio at the Folkwang University of Applied Sciences in Essen and to develop a special course for electronic composition.
In 1986, as part of a research project, he was head of the music department in the project group for planning the ZKM (Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe). His works have been performed in Europe, the USA, East Asia and Australia. The composition "nested loops III" for piano and tapes was selected for the ICMC ( International Computer Music Conference ) in 1986 in The Hague . The composition verSTIMMUNG was selected for the ICMC 1996 in Hong Kong and was awarded a CD release. In 2000 the composition "Dialog" for alto saxophone, tape and video was performed at the ICMC in Berlin. There are numerous publications by Reith on composition theory in instrumental and electronic music and extensive research projects in the field of computer music. He has been a guest lecturer at universities and institutes in the following countries: Holland, France, Austria, Italy, Bulgaria, Russia, USA, Australia, Israel, Japan and Korea.
Reith composes primarily in connection with mechanical instruments and electronics, multimedia stage projects and in the field of algorithmic composition. Dirk Reith is Professor of Composition at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen and was artistic director of the ICEM (Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media) until October 2011 , as well as founder of the International Festival for Computer Music and Media Art EX MACHINA in Essen.

Dirk Reith is a founding member of the GNMR (Society for New Music Ruhr eV) and was a board member there for over 10 years. From 1996 to 2000 he was chairman of the board of the GNMR. Between 1997 and 2003 he headed the working groups Multimedia and Art NRW and the working group Interactive Media Stage of the MSWWF (Ministry for Schools, Further Education, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia). In 1997 he founded the international festival november music in Essen together with Dietrich Hahne . This festival takes place annually together with the Dutch and Belgian sections of november music .
