Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media ( ICEM ) at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen was founded in 1990 as a central institute.

History and tasks

Emerging from the electronic studio founded in 1971, the ICEM is a place for research and teaching and, in addition to the studios for electronic music / media, includes other specialist departments for audio and media technology. The ICEM was founded by Dirk Reith , who was also artistic director until October 2011. The institute is managed by an institute council chaired by Thomas Neuhaus .

The main task of the ICEM is research and teaching in art-relevant areas of computer science and media technology and their use in the musical-acoustic, visual and performing arts as well as the supervision of all projects of the university in which media are used extensively.

There are currently eight studios available to students and lecturers. In addition, the ICEM looks after a collection of historical instruments and devices of electronic music as well as an archive with in-house productions since 1971.

Due to the direct proximity to dance, theater and science, the students at the ICEM are offered an education that favors interdisciplinary projects.
