The oak gallery is a natural monument in the forest of Darmstadt-Ost , near the district boundary to Messel .

Flora and history

The oak row (and partly beech row ) consists of trees that are between 250 and 350 years old. It is a natural attraction that is linked to the history of the Landwehr in Hesse .

The oak gallery forms a striking part of the landscape that is worth preserving from a landscape design point of view. In addition, the gallery on Bohlenweg in Gewann Stümelches hedge is an important habitat for many creatures on the Red List species . To the east of the row of trees is the parallel Sülzbach .

Natural monument

The oak gallery has been a natural monument since 1993. The reason for protection is the age, the beauty, the rarity and the cultural significance of the gallery.

Old Landwehr

The " Alte Landwehr " is a 20 km long border trench that stretches around Darmstadt from west to east . In the 14th century, the Counts of Katzenelnbogen laid this early, small “Limes”. The Landwehr moved between the area of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen and the Counts of Isenburg . Its course can be reconstructed from Bayerseich , from where the Landwehr ran in an almost straight line towards Messel . Immediately at the Messel district boundary , the Landwehr turned directly to the south, ran along the Scheftheimer Wiesen , west past Roßdorf to the vicinity of Ober-Ramstadt .

The oak gallery was part of the Landwehr.

In the Scheftheimer Wiesen area , the “Old Landwehr” is still well preserved and has been partially reconstructed.

The Landwehr should make it more difficult to steal wood in their own forest. In addition, the Landwehr served the princes as a game protection fence and as a customs barrier . Customs stations could be conveniently set up at the crossings in the Landwehr, where the merchants were required to pay customs duties on their goods.

The "Alte Landwehr" is a listed building .
