history

Evangelical church in the town center

Egelsbach was first mentioned in a document in 1275 . The village then belonged to the Lords of Falkenstein , who probably inherited the place in 1255 from the Lords of Hagen-Münzenberg . After the male line of Falkensteiner died out in 1486, the Counts of Isenburg Egelsbach inherited .

In 1526 the Reformation was introduced in the village. In 1600 the Count of Isenburg sold the Kelsterbach office with Egelsbach and Langen to the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt . Since then Egelsbach has been in Hesse . In 1705 Egelsbach became its own parish after it was separated from the Langen parish. When the Länger Mark was divided up in 1732, to which Egelsbach had belonged since ancient times, Egelsbach received a third of the market floor. In 1821 the Kelsterbach office was canceled and Egelsbach belonged to the district of Langen until 1832 . Since then Egelsbach has been part of the Offenbach district . In 1873 the place received a train station on the Frankfurt am Main - Darmstadt line , and in 1955 the Egelsbach airfield was established.

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse in the 1970s, Egelsbach was one of the few communities that was not changed and was able to maintain its independence.

Historical forms of names

Historically documented mentions of the place are (in brackets the year of mention):

  • Elsbach (1275)
  • Eygelspach (1336)
  • Egelßbach (1396)
  • Egelspach (1411)

In the vernacular, Egelsbach is occasionally referred to by the nickname Klammerschnitzerdorf .

Population development

Since Egelsbach had 1291 inhabitants in 1834, the population has increased significantly. As early as 1939 there were 3,695 inhabitants. In 1987 Egelsbach had 9089 inhabitants. The municipality had a population of 9,689 on December 31, 2003. This results in a population increase of 600 people or about 6.7 percent in the years 1987 to 2003. In mid-March 2008 the population exceeded the 10,000 mark. This was mainly due to the expansion of the “Im Brühl” development area.

Blazon : "In silver, a green oak branch with three acorns growing from a red heart."

The coat of arms of the Egelsbach community was approved by the Hessian Interior Minister on May 9, 1953 . It was designed by the heraldist Georg Massoth .

The court seal with an inscription dated 1622 shows the oak branch growing out of a piece of branch, which makes it look very similar to the court seal of Langen from the same year, while a stucco coat of arms from 1615 in the church has a stylized oak tree with three acorns in a wreath, both references to the Belonging to the Wildbann Dreieich .

flag

The flag was approved by the Hessian Minister of the Interior on March 31, 1966 and is described as follows:
