CitizenGIS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A citizen GIS is the name for a geographical information system that is made available to citizens by municipalities via the Internet.

concept

The content of a Citizen GIS are images of digital maps as originally created, maintained and used in the respective local government . The aim is to make the cartographic basis of municipal decision-making processes transparent for the citizens. The boundary to city plans is basically fluid - in terms of content, a citizen GIS is primarily distinguished by the provision of land use maps or cadastral maps and mostly also by orthophotos (aerial photographs). In addition, BürgerGIS are characterized by the provision of highly specialized map levels, e.g. B. Zoning plan cadastre , maps from local mappings (e.g. biotope mapping) or from disaster control (e.g. local / regional flood hazard).

application

Functionally, a Citizen GIS differs through the intensive use of external map levels ( WebMapServices ) and the associated networking, especially of official map servers within the framework of the spatial data infrastructure (GDI).

Well-known examples are:

  • Citizen GIS of the Offenbach district, since 2002
  • Citizen GIS of the Bergstrasse district, since 2008
  • BürgerGIS of the district of Schwäbisch Hall, since 2013
