Wixhausen is a district of the independent city of Darmstadt in southern Hesse . The district consists of the two statistical districts Wixhausen-West and Wixhausen-Ost .

geography

Wixhausen is located on the northern edge of Darmstadt in the sub-Main plain between Erzhausen in the north, Graefenhausen in the west, Arheilgen and Kranichstein in the south and Messel in the east.

Waters

history

Wixhausen was already settled in the Bronze Age. Extensive grave finds in the local area, belonging to the middle hill burial period Schwanheim, have led to a separate classification of the double wheel needles , so-called spectacle spirals , of the Wixhausen type in archeology . The first signs of settlement in the Wixhausen district can be found around 1400 BC. 750/780 Wixhausen was then incorporated into the Franconian Empire. Wixhausen was first mentioned by name in 1172, namely as "Wickenhusen", which means something like "Siedlung am Weiher ", since in the Middle Ages the area was crossed by several spring streams with small pond areas.

The baroque Protestant church , built from 1774 to 1776, is worth seeing. It has a daily striking mechanism from 1517 in the Romanesque tower from 1150 (the oldest surviving Darmstadt building) and special windows ("Physikfenster" by Thomas Duttenhoefer , 1997). The cemetery was inaugurated in 1869.

Territorial reform

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Wixhausen was incorporated into Darmstadt in 1977 . For Wixhausen, a local district with a local advisory board and mayor was formed, the only one in Darmstadt. In addition to the Wixhausen district, the district also includes the part of the Arheilgen district that lies north of the Sülzbach or Silzbach . (The actual district boundary to the east is often identical to the building boundary and is limited to the north of the locality essentially to areas west of the B 3.)
