Wixhausen cemetery
The Wixhäuser Friedhof is a cemetery in Darmstadt-Wixhausen .
history
Today's Wixhausen cemetery on Auwiesenweg was inaugurated in 1869 and surrounded by a wall. Before that, the enclosed churchyard was a burial place. To the south of the old building, a memorial for war dead was built in the 1950s by students of the sculptor Fritz Schwarzbeck . A roofing over the morgue that was added at the beginning of the 1950s is intended to protect the mourners from the weather. The architectural design of this weather protection with a round opening is typical of the 1950s. In 1969 the cemetery was expanded to the west. In the mid-1980s there was a further extension to the railway line. After the construction of a noise protection wall, a new mourning hall was built on Auwiesenweg.
