Location of the Johannesviertel within Darmstadt

The Johannesviertel is a statistical district in the north of Darmstadt . It borders on Kasinostraße to the west and north, Frankfurter Straße to the east and Bismarckstraße to the south and occupies an area of 38.3 hectares. The Johannesviertel was built from 1872 on a previously undeveloped area and was first named after the builder Heinrich Blumenthal (Manufacturer) called "Blumenthalviertel". Most of the buildings from the Wilhelminian era are still quite well preserved. Green front gardens and back gardens are typical of the Johannesviertel. Architecturally, there are mainly classicist and brick facades. The Protestant St. John's Church was built there between 1892 and 1894.

In the Johannesviertel there are two grammar schools on the so-called “school island” with the Justus Liebig and Eleonor schools. The secondary and secondary school Diesterwegschule was also located there. This was closed. The school building is used by other schools. The Goetheschule is a primary school in Viktoriastraße .

Johanneskirche

In the center of the Johannesviertel is the church of the Johannesgemeinde, which was built between 1892 and 1894. In 1887, at the intersection of today's Liebigstrasse and Kahlertstrasse, a building site was purchased for 46,000 marks. The planning by the municipality for the construction of the Gothic church began in 1891. The foundation stone was laid on October 18, 1892, and the church was used on December 31. August 1894. During the air raid on Darmstadt on 23./24. September 1943, the church was badly damaged, so that no more services could be held. During the fire night in September 1944, the church was also set on fire. After the end of the war, the first clearing and restoration work began from 1946 to 1948. After an interruption in favor of the reconstruction of the parish hall, which was used as an emergency church, construction work continued in 1952 following donations from the USA. On November 2, 1952 the church was consecrated and used again for church services.
