The Justus Liebig School in Darmstadt is a grammar school founded in 1911 . It is located in the Johannesviertel . The school was named after the chemist of the same name . The school focuses on the natural sciences and a bilingual program in French .

history

The grammar school was founded on September 18, 1911 next to the Lichtenberg school as the successor to the " Oberrealschule " at that time . The short name "Lio" can be traced back to the former name "Liebig-Oberrealschule", which was used from 1911 to 1937. The school building in what is now Landwehrstrasse was moved into under the name of "Großherzogliche Oberrealschule zu Darmstadt". The school building is right next to the Eleonorenschule , on the so-called "School Island" in the Johannesviertel.

The school building was built by the city architect August Buxbaum from 1909 to 1911. A gymnasium (formerly "Stadthalle") separates the former boys 'school from the neighboring girls' school, Eleonorenschule. There is now a close cooperation between the two schools. The List building of the former Diesterweg School is used jointly for teaching purposes. Furthermore, a common cafeteria is operated in the former gym of the Diesterwegschule.

From September 14, 1942 to October 2, 1942, the school was used as a transit camp for Jews on their way to the extermination camps in Theresienstadt , Auschwitz and elsewhere. The transports were kept secret after the Second World War . A memorial plaque was only installed in the school building in 1991. In 2013 the past was presented in an exhibition in the Justus Liebig House.

After the Second World War, the building was briefly confiscated by the USA. The Darmstädter Echo was also printed there for a short time .

Core renovation from 2016

The main building of the Justus Liebig School has been extensively renovated since 2016. In addition to renewing the electrics and water pipes, fire protection measures are being implemented and contaminated plaster is being replaced. The classrooms will have impact sound insulation and the building will be converted to be barrier-free . a. an elevator is installed. Furthermore, new teacher's work, art and computer rooms are being built on the top floor, which was previously mainly used as a gym.

The cost of the renovation was estimated at just under € 10 million, of which the State of Hesse will assume 80%. After 1.5 years of construction was originally scheduled, it is now becoming apparent that the building will not be ready for occupancy again until the school year 2021. During the construction work, most of the school operations will take place in the buildings of the former Diesterweg School.

Others

In front of the school building at Landwehrstraße 28 there is a memorial that reminds of Justus von Liebig .
