Erich Meyer (born August 6, 1951 ) is an Austrian engineer , amateur astronomer and asteroid discoverer.

Life

Between 1996 and 1999 he discovered a total of 21 asteroids at the private observatory Meyer / Obermair in Davidschlag , seven of them together with his colleague Erwin Obermair and one together with Herbert Raab . In addition, he was involved in six other asteroid discoveries from 1996 to 2005, which were awarded by the International Astronomical Union to the Davidschlag observatory.

One of Meyer's most important observations is the precise determination of the position of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 , which he was able to obtain in 1993 together with Erwin Obermair and Herbert Raab and which contributed significantly to predicting the subsequent impact of this comet on the planet Jupiter .

In 2018, Erich Meyer succeeded - in time for the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the 3rd Kepler Law - to identify Johannes Kepler's house in Linz Hofgasse (house no. 7), which Kepler and his family lived in from 1613 to 1620.

Meyer is a member of the Linz Astronomical Community and leads star tours at the Johannes Kepler Observatory Linz . Meyer worked professionally as an engineer in the field of maintenance of industrial plants.

Awards

On April 4, 1997 Meyer was awarded the Silver Merit of the Republic of Austria . The asteroid (7940) Erichmeyer was named after him on June 10, 1998. In 2005, Meyer was awarded a Gene Shoemaker NEO Grant by the Planetary Society to support his work in the field of near-Earth asteroids . On October 5, 2018, Meyer was awarded the title " Consultant for Science" by the Province of Upper Austria .
