The nature reserve Hegbachaue bei Messel (NSG identification 1438021) is located in the southern part of the Offenbach district in Hesse , in the northern end of the city of Darmstadt and its eastern part in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district . It includes around 228.36 hectares of forest and meadow.

Area description

The Hegbachaue naturally belongs to the Messel hill country . The area of the nature reserve, which extends from west to east, lies with its eastern part in the north of the Messel district . Parts of the area are in the districts of Egelsbach , Langen and Offenthal (city of Dreieich ) (all of the Offenbach district). The southern part is in the city of Darmstadt, Arheilgen district . It was designated as a nature reserve on February 3, 1987, the currently valid protection ordinance dates from December 9, 1994. The NSG "Hegbachaue bei Messel" has been part of the Natura2000 area "Kranichsteiner Wald mit Hegbachaue, Mörsbacher Grund and Silzwiesen" (FFH Area 6018-305).

The Hegbach , which flows through the middle, and its meadow landscape up to the adjacent forest areas are under protection . These are bounded to the north by the Offenthaler Schneise in the Koberstädter Forest . In the east, the area is bounded by the floodplains of a confluence of several brooks in the Hegbach west of the Hegbach pond . To the south, the Hanau Steinschneise delimits the nature reserve, to the west it is the transition from the forest area to the agricultural area southeast of Egelsbach. The Ernst-Ludwig-Teich is centrally located in the NSG .

Protection purpose

The purpose of the protection is to preserve the characteristic forest communities and a cultural landscape created by extensive use of meadows, as well as to secure the near-natural floodplains of the Hegbach and the Rutschbach as a habitat for a multitude of rare and endangered plant and animal species. The nature reserve includes the wet meadows and old wood stocks on both sides of Hegbach and Rutschbach between Messel and Egelsbach. Relatively small areas and usually on the edges of the meadows that are still in use, there are remnants of the previously much more widespread humid grasslands . Much of the meadow that has been fallow for a long time is now occupied by species-poor large sedge beds or reed beds . The abandoned field in the east of the area and the surrounding fallow meadows are now populated by interesting succession stages. The forest areas include swamp forests and riverside forests .

Flora and fauna

In the grassland areas grow Silgen- and water ragwort meadows (Sanguisorbo-Siletum), moor grass , meadow foxtail - oat grass -Wiese, cabbage thistle - angelica -Wiesenfuchsschwanz Meadows, Rotschwingelwiesen and mat-grass meadows . Siberian iris , common adder's tongue , dyer's notch and hair-strand-leaved fennel are mentioned as notable plant species . The forest areas consist of alder-ash forest with common oak and white elm , oak-hornbeam forest and hornbeam -beech forest .

On Hegbach breed kingfisher and wagtail , at Ernst-Ludwig Pond nesting grebes , sometimes gray heron . The meadows are populated by field owls , stonechats , marsh warblers and goldhamers .
