The sandstone quarries at Burzelberg Mrs.-Nauses are a nature reserve in the district Wiebelsbach - woman Nauses (city Gross-Umstadt ) in Darmstadt-Dieburg in Southern Hesse . It was expelled by ordinance of December 14, 1994.

location

The decommissioned in the 1980s Odenwald red sandstone - quarry on Burzelberg located in the Natural Environment Sandstone Odenwald northeast of woman-Nauses, just off the national highway 45 towards the valley right. From the B45 you can still see the now blocked, former driveway. The reserve covers an area of 19.46 hectares. An almost identical sub-area has been part of the Natura2000 area "Cliffs of the northern Odenwald" (EU bird sanctuary 6119-402) since 2008 .

Protection purpose

With the protection, the near-natural forest mantle and the adjacent, warmth- loving fringing societies are to be preserved. They are habitat for endangered animal and plant species. In addition, the rock walls are to be secured because of their geological, natural and scenic importance. Appropriate habitat structures should be created for the maintenance goal of reintroducing peregrine falcons .

description

The quarry is on the edge of a larger forest area. The forests belonging to the nature and bird sanctuary have been partially taken out of forest management. The largest dismantling wall is around 25 to 30 meters high. Its walls are covered with a few pines and birches. There are also three smaller fractures, some of which have overgrown. Successful breeding of the peregrine falcon was recorded in the area from 1995 to 2010. In 2011, peregrine falcons stayed in the quarry but did not breed. The eagle owl has been breeding in the quarry since 2009 .

Impairments

Even before it was placed under protection in 1994, the abandoned quarry was known as the Silberwald climbing area . Climbing is currently still permitted in the nature reserve, limited to a narrow parcel (Corridor 2, No. 11) and the period from July 15th to November 30th. In order not to disturb the breeding of the peregrine falcon and eagle owl, a full closure for climbers was recommended in 2011. In the immediate vicinity of the quarry there is also a busy main road.
