The Neuwiese von Messel is a nature reserve in the districts of Messel and Eppertshausen in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse . It was designated by ordinance of March 20, 1986 and its delimitations were added on October 31, 1994.
location
The "Neuwiese von Messel" is centrally located in the Messel Hügelland natural area about 3 kilometers east of Messel. The nature reserve consists of two parts to the north and south of the district road 180 Messel - Eppertshausen. The total area of the protected area is 107.18 hectares. Since 2008 it has been embedded as a southern part in the larger Natura2000 area "Neuwiese and Wald northeast of Messel" (FFH area 6018-307).
Protection purpose
With the protection, the plant species of the wet meadow communities and the species-rich oak-hornbeam forest are to be preserved. The meadows and the adjacent forest are to be secured and developed as a habitat, feeding and resting area for endangered animal species, especially meadow breeders.
description
The area consists of a meadow area as a larger contiguous forest clearing in the Messel Forest. The Neuwiese has been documented as Naue wyße or newe wiesen as a field name since 1518 , and extensive mowing and pasture use of the forest islands has existed since the 16th century. The open meadow areas are small-scale interlocking with varied forest structures. Several trenches crisscross the area.
Flora and fauna
The Neuwiese comprises the habitats pipes grass meadows on calcareous, peaty and clayey and silty soils ( Molinion caeruleae ) (LRT 6410) and Lowland hay meadows ( Alopecurus pratensis , Sanguisorba officinalis ) (LRT 6510) and small-area Species-rich montane and submontane bristle grass turf silicate soils ( LRT 6230). Especially in spring, the meadow area has a high density of rare blooming plants such as the Siberian iris . The dark blue ant is native here. As part of the maintenance measures of the FFH area, the preservation of the character of the meadow is supported by single mowing of the meadows and pruning . The routing of wild supports the spread of various grasses.
The forest areas in the nature reserve consist of oak-hornbeam forest (LRT 9160) and woodruff-beech forest (LRT 9130), alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (LRT 91E0) grow on damp or wet soils , in the north there is also the beech forest (LRT 9110) ) in front.
