The nature reserve Am Kleewoog von Graefenhausen is a nature reserve in the districts of Arheilgen in the city of Darmstadt and Graefenhausen , community of Weiterstadt in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg , southern Hesse. It was designated by ordinance of November 14, 1985 with an area of 20.89 hectares and the delimitation was extended on October 31, 1994.
location
The nature reserve is located in the Untermainebene natural area - Hegbach-Apfelbach-Grund between Graefenhausen, Wixhausen , Arheilgen and Weiterstadt , west of Arheilgen. It belongs to the northernmost part of the "Teufelshölle" forest. In the south, wooded areas border the “Stadt Darmstadt” landscape protection area , otherwise it is surrounded by agricultural land.
Protection purpose
The reserve is a former gravel quarrying area with adjacent forest areas. By placing it under protection, the resulting water surface with its environment of dry biotopes and pine - oak mixed forest is to be preserved as a habitat for endangered animals and plants. It is to be secured and developed as a resting place for water bird species .
description
On the former gravel pit area in the western half of the nature reserve there is a large water-filled pit with steep and richly structured banks. This lake "Kleewoog" is approx. 180 m long and approx. 180 m wide and has a water surface of approx. 3.3 hectares. There are also several small pits that are densely overgrown with reeds and willows. About half of the area is taken up by an approximately 100-year-old mixed pine-oak forest or fescue-heather-moss-pine forest. The soil consists of decalcified acidic sands from the Darmstadt drifting sand area. A former flood channel runs through the forest from northwest to southwest, in which nitrogen-showing herbs grow.
Flora and fauna
In the area there are plants of the sandy and ruderal flora . The area is a breeding and resting area for numerous bird species, some of which are threatened. Great spotted woodpecker , green woodpecker and black woodpecker have been observed. Numerous species of insects have been identified. To protect the amphibians and reptiles , an amphibian protection system was built on the nearby Weiterstädter Straße.
Impairments
The quiet in the nature reserve is impaired by operations on the West Runway at Frankfurt am Main Airport and by a neighboring shooting range.
