The dune on the Ulvenberg of Darmstadt-Eberstadt (also: "Ulvenbergdüne", "Düne auf dem Escholl", "Escholldüne", "Eberstädter Düne" and "Eselskopp") is a nature reserve on the western edge of the Darmstadt-Eberstadt district . The nature reserve is about 8.89 hectares.

geology

The sand dune on the Ulvenberg ( inland dune ) was formed at the end of the Vistula Ice Age in the cold tundra climate through sand drifts from Pleistocene drifting sand. The drifting sand dunes in Darmstadt-Eberstadt are part of an approx. 130 km long dune train that extends from Rastatt to Mainz .

The dune on Ulvenberg can be divided into different vegetation units:

Mixed pine forest
Pfriemengras - steppe lawn
loose silver grass dry grass
Dry xerothermal awl grass lawn

Nature reserve

Parts of the dune had been protected as a natural monument since 1938 under the name “Dune on the Escholl” . The dune has been a nature reserve since 1991 and an FFH area since 2001 .

The reason for protection is the preservation of the dune flora.

There are numerous plant species on the area that are protected, worth protecting or endangered.

etymology

Am Ulvenberg : Probably a derivation from the old personal name Ulfo (wolf).
