The Scheftheimer Wiesen is a nature reserve of 166.07 hectares established in 1993 in the east of Darmstadt in Hesse .
location
The Scheftheimer Wiesen are located southeast of the Kranichstein hunting lodge between Dieburger Straße and Bundesstraße 26 . You start near the Steinbrücker pond , which used to supply water to the Kranichstein pheasantry . The meadows stretch to the southeast along the Ruthsenbach .
history
The open areas of the meadows were used by the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt in the 16th and 17th centuries for so-called ceased hunting , in which the hunters could easily kill the game from the wooden stands. Further use after the end of hunting by the sovereigns as arable land was later abandoned in contrast to the Oberfeld west of the meadows . Wetlands developed that are now protected.
prehistory
In the south-easternmost part of the nature reserve there is a system consisting of 14 re-assembled and erected granite blocks ( megaliths ) called the Menhiranlage von Darmstadt . There are some barrows along the Bernhardsackerschneise .
etymology
Historically documented forms of names in Darmstadt:
- To Scheftheim (1521)
- uf schiffthum ( ca.1550 )
- vf Schefftum (1569)
- on Schiffthumer Weg (1581)
- in Schaffhumb (1634)
- Scheftheimer Schlag (1634)

Scheftheim is a desolate, fallen settlement in the Darmstadt area that has not been documented. The - heim name probably goes back to an (unclear) weakly documented mhd. Schift for a "sloping point".
Schefter is a historically documented form of the name in Darmstadt-Arheilgen:
- Scheftirstrudin (14th century), probably Strut "Buschwald" but it could also be an early shortened form of the desert name Scheftheim ; but probably an early evidence of dialectal sheepern as a name for the field horsetail (Equisetum arvense).
