Jean-Mathurin Guénaël Thomas
Jean-Mathurin Guénaël Thomas (born November 27, 1899 in Plougastel-Daoulas , † January 5, 1945 in Hamburg-Neuengamme ) was a French Trappist , supporter of the Resistance and a victim of National Socialism .
life and work
Jean-Mathurin Thomas, a student in the Petit Séminaire of Pont-Croix , was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1926, taught in Guissény and entered the Trappist Timadeuc Monastery in 1932 , where he took the religious name Gwenaël (also: Guénaël ). In July 1941 he returned from German captivity to his monastery and took a leading part in the activities organized under Abbot Dominique Nogues as part of the Resistance. He was arrested by the Gestapo on June 14, 1943 , interrogated and taken from the Royallieu concentration camp to the Neuengamme concentration camp on June 7, 1944 (inmate number 33539). He died there of exhaustion in early 1945. In Plougastel-Daoulas a street bears his name (with the inscription: "Père GWENAËL (Né Jean-Mathurin THOMAS) 1899-1945 Résistant-mort en déportation").
