The Faulbruch von Münster is a nature reserve in the Münster district in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district , southern Hesse . The 77.00 hectare protected area (NSG identification 1432011) was designated by ordinance of October 17, 1985 and its delimitation was slightly expanded on September 20, 1993. The protection purpose is to preserve and develop the cultural landscape characterized by grassland and the adjacent forest communities, especially the alder quarry forest , as a habitat.

location

The Faulbruch (historically also: the Faulbruch) is located in the natural areas of the Lower Main Plain - Gersprenz lowlands and Messeler Hügelland on the western edge of Münster. On the eastern edge the federal highway 45 borders the protected area, on the southern edge the "Munastraße" and on the northern edge the "Russenschneise". The Breitefeld district is located on the southwestern edge of the Faulbruch.

description

The reserve is a forest and meadow area on wet soil over pliocene clay layers . The terrain extends from 134 to 143 meters above sea level. The originally existing forest was cleared about halfway at the end of the 19th century, provided with numerous drainage ditches and converted into fields and meadows. After afforestation from 1945, around 65% of the area is currently forest, 21% grassland and 7% arable land. In the west there is a small pond (goose pond) in the forest.

Flora and fauna

A large number of plants, some of which are rare and endangered, grow in the protected area. The grassland consists of large sedge societies , Wiesenknopf-Schwingel wet meadows and alternately humid smooth oat meadows . Pipe grass dominates on fallow grassland . The forest on the wet locations is alder - quarry forest , partly with large sedge, in somewhat drier locations red beech forest . A total of 277 plant species were detected, 15 of them on the Red List.

The Faulbruch is also a breeding and feeding biotope for some animal species, some of which are endangered. The mammals badger , water shrew , noctule bat and mouse-eared mouse live here. There are 14 species of amphibians and reptiles on the Red List. The area is home to 75 breeding bird species, including 14 species on the Red List. In addition, numerous insect species, including swallowtail , piston water beetle and rhinoceros beetle have been identified.

Impairments

The nature reserve was affected several times by illegal littering. In December 2016, 150 car tires were tipped into the forest. In December 2019, 35 cubic meters of roof insulation material had been deposited on a dirt road in the Faulbruch. The disposal of the hazardous waste made costly disposal necessary.
