Bavarian share beer brewery Aschaffenburg

The Bayerische Aktien-Bierbrauerei Aschaffenburg was a brewery in Aschaffenburg that existed from 1867 to 1975.

history

The old BABA, as it was popularly known shortly after it was founded, has existed for over 100 years. On December 18, 1866, six citizens of Aschaffenburg got together and decided to build a new brewery on a site on Glattbacher Strasse. This location was chosen because the water from the Glattbach could be used as brewing water here. Construction work was awarded on February 1, 1867, and the brewery was officially put into operation in December 1867. The first beer tasting took place on April 2nd, 1868 in the presence of all members of the board of directors. The estimated total costs including the acquisition of the land amounted to almost 200,000 guilders, with a start-up capital of 46,000 guilders. On July 18, 1867, the entry was made in the registry court.

In the initial phase the brewery was designed for a production of 10,000  hl , but this soon turned out to be far too low. The company was expanded through investments. The beer was of the highest quality and that is how it became known across the border from Bavaria to Hesse. The Bavarian brewery was awarded the title of “court supplier” by Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse and the Rhine . For its 25th anniversary in 1892, an output of 34,000 hl was achieved. This made the BABA the largest brewery in the city of Aschaffenburg.

In the years 1899/1900 the BABA took over the restaurant breweries "Zum Hopfengarten", "Die Gesellschaftsbrauerei", "Zum Wurstbendel" and "Zur Rose". The BABA was the market leader among the breweries in Aschaffenburg. The purchase price for these four pub breweries was two million marks. BABA played a pioneering role in 1895 when it began to fill beer in bottles. By exporting various types of beer, production could be increased further. With further expansions of the production facility, the malt house and administration were relocated to the "hop garden".

In 1908 BABA took over “Die Löwenbrauerei Goldbach” and in 1910 “Die Brauerei Dörr” in Hanau. The brewery suffered an economic crisis with the outbreak of the First World War. In 1918 beer sales had dropped to almost 55,000 hectoliters. In 1939, before the start of the war, beer sales of 100,000 hectoliters were achieved. As early as 1963, on an expansion course, BABA acquired the "Wiesbadener Felsenkeller Brewery". In 1970 BABA merged with the “ Binding Brewery ” in Frankfurt. This merger temporarily increased beer sales by almost 200,000 hectoliters. BABA not only lost its independence, but also its name. It was now called "Bindingbrauerei AG, Aschaffenburg branch". In 1974 BABA achieved an annual turnover of 170,000 hectoliters. The brewery was shut down in 1975.
