Breitefeld is a district of the municipality of Münster (Hesse) in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse . The settlement site is in the middle of the forest. The small town was only founded on a military conversion area in July 1997 by a resolution of the Münster municipal council .

history

Breitefeld began with an ammunition facility ( Muna for short ) of the German Air Force that was built between 1939 and 1940 as part of the armament of the Wehrmacht . Under the official name of the Lufthauptmunitionsanstalt Dieburg , it was used to manufacture and store air force ammunition. The ammunition was stored in numerous above-ground bunkers. When American front troops approached at the end of March 1945, most of the bunkers, including the ammunition stored in them, were blown up by the German Wehrmacht itself. After the end of the war, further explosions took place, which contaminated a large part of the Münster forest.

Under the name Muenster Ammo Depot , the former air ammunition facility continued to be used by the US Army from 1951. The Muenster barracks was built in the area of the former residential and administrative buildings of the Muna . This was occupied by various American units (Military Police, 184th Ordnance Company) until 1995. The ammunition bunkers are about 1 km west of the barracks.

During the Cold War, the ammunition store was one of the most important supply depots for special weapons (such as nuclear warheads , see Nuclear Weapons in Germany ) of NATO. From the beginning of the 1980s, these were stored in a specially secured area ( Special Weapons Depot ) within the existing ammunition depot. As a result of the INF treaty , all nuclear weapons were withdrawn from Münster by the end of 1991.

After the end of its use by the Americans, the barracks area was rededicated to a mixed area and commercial areas were designated. The current district was established in 1997. Most of the 280 hectare area of the former Muna is still contaminated by ammunition from the Second World War and is not accessible to the public. For economic reasons, ordnance could only be disposed of in some areas .

In the 2011 census , 297 inhabitants were counted for Breitefeld.
