geography

Environment map

Community structure

The municipality of Münster consists of three districts; Münster itself has around 12,000 inhabitants, to the east of which the Altheim , which was incorporated on December 31, 1971, with around 3,000 inhabitants, and in the northwest, the young Breitefeld district, founded in July 1997, with around 200 inhabitants.

Neighboring communities

The municipality of Eppertshausen is to the north of Münster , the city of Babenhausen to the east, the cities of Groß-Umstadt and Dieburg to the south, and the municipality of Messel to the west .

history

The name Münster indicates a foundation in the Frankish or Carolingian times. Old documents speak of monsters, munsters or monsters. The word refers to the Latin monasterium, which means something like monastery church or "belonging to the monastery".

In a deed of donation from the year 782 AD to the Lorsch monastery , an abbess Aba speaks of a property "ad gaspenze" (on the Gersprenz river ). This property belongs to a Neuenhof monastery, which is located in the Rheingau in the Raodora district (Roden, Ober- and Nieder-Roden) on the river 'Rohada' ( Rodau ) and which she donates to Lorsch Monastery with all associated properties. Maybe Münster was this property on the Gersprenz.

Münster is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1254. At the same time, a small place, Werlach, is mentioned again and again, which was near the Werlacher Mühle (today's Ries agricultural property) and no longer existed around 1489, because in a document from this time Werlach is referred to as "the devastated village" .

In the historical documents, the place is documented under changing place names over the centuries . As Monstre (1189–1220), as Munstre (around 1290), as Munster (1294), as Menstere (1325), as Monster (1361), as Munster (1423), as Münßter (1629) and from 1687 as Münster. On March 28, 2017, the name of the municipality was changed from Münster (near Dieburg) to Münster (Hesse).

In the course of inheritance disputes, Münster was given 5/6 to Count Falkenstein and 1/6 to the Count of Hanau . When Werner II von Falkenstein died out in the male line in 1418, the rulership in Münster changed again. In May 1419, the Falkenstein inheritance was divided among the three sisters of the last Falkensteiner.

Münster and Werlach came to the Solmser line and through succession partly to the widowed Countess Anna von Sayn and partly to the Count of Ysenburg . From 1486 Count Dieter von Ysenburg owned 5/6 of Münster and Werlach. Werlach is mentioned for the last time in this document.

The remaining sixth of Münster and Werlach, which in turn came to the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg through succession , was ceded to Kurmainz by exchange in 1684 . Mainz exchanged this part of Münster for Ysenburg in 1706, which was now in the entire possession of Münster. Since Prince Carl von Ysenburg had allied himself with Napoleon I , he had to reckon with consequences after his defeat. He fled to Switzerland and could not prevent his principality from coming to Emperor Franz I of Austria in 1815 and, as a result of the state treaty concluded with Austria and Prussia on June 30, 1816, to the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Münster in 1829:

»Münster (L. Bez. Offenbach) cath. Parish village; is 5 St. from Offenbach between Dieburg and Babenhausen separated from the district on the right bank of the Gersprenz and belongs to the 5 deputy places of the Count of Isenburg-Philippseich . There are 176 houses and 1604 inhabitants, except for 9 Luth. and 77 Jews are Catholic. The inhabitants grow a lot of flax and export it in abundance. The church was rebuilt in 1785 except for the tower. - In 1277 Philipp and Werner von Falkenstein were in the undivided possession of Münster, which originally belonged to the von Munzenberg family. 1304 16 was given to Hanau. The Counts of Sayn appear in 1444 as owners of the Falkenstein part. In 1484 this part was bought by Isenburg. The Hanau 16 came in 1684 through settlement to Churmainz, who in 1706 ceded its shares of Münster and Urberach to Count Philipp von Isenburg against Weissenau and Hechtsheim. Münster came under Hess Highness in 1816. "

On June 30, 2019, a forest fire broke out in the forest area of the former Muna, which lasted for several days and destroyed around 8 hectares of forest. In addition to the local fire department and the district, units from neighboring districts and the Frankfurt airport fire department were also deployed. The extinguishing work was made more difficult by the ammunition pollution of the soil, which led to explosions and made it impossible for firefighters to enter some affected forest areas. Several extinguishing robots were sometimes used here.

Incorporations

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , the Altheim community voluntarily joined the Münster community. Since July 1997 the Breitefeld settlement has been run as a district on the former military site. Local districts according to the Hessian municipal code were not established.

The municipality has been using modifications of the coat of arms since at least 1683 as a court seal, in which the swan and beam stand in a square shield.
