The district court Groß-Umstadt (until 1879 regional court (Groß-) Umstadt ) was a Hessian court of ordinary jurisdiction that existed from 1821 to 1968 (as a branch until 1970) with its seat in the city of Groß-Umstadt .

history

In the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt , the judicial system was reorganized in an executive order of December 9, 1803. The “Hofgericht Darmstadt” was set up as a court of second instance for the Principality of Starkenburg . The jurisdiction of the first instance was carried out by the offices or the landlords . The court court was the second instance court for normal civil disputes, and the first instance for civil family law cases and criminal cases. The superior court of appeal in Darmstadt was superordinate .

With the founding of the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1806, this function was retained, while the tasks of the first instance were transferred to the newly created regional courts in 1821 as part of the separation of jurisdiction and administration. “Regional Court Groß-Umstadt” was therefore from 1821 to 1879 the name for the court of first instance in Groß-Umstadt. In the territorial territories of the Starkenburg province , there was still a judicial office in Michelstadt for court cases of the second instance, which was subordinate to the court. The German Courts Constitution Act of 1879 led to a uniform judicial organization throughout the empire . The “Hofgericht Darmstadt” has now become the “ Regional Court of Darmstadt ” as the superior second instance in the province, while the first instance courts have been renamed the District Court.

district Court

With the separation of administration and justice by the Grand Ducal Hessian Ordinance of July 14, 1821, the Umstadt Regional Court was formed, whose district was initially congruent with the Dieburg district and therefore had the following components:

With the reorganization of the judicial districts in the Starkenburg province with effect from June 1, 1853, the town of Münster , which had previously belonged to the Offenbach district court, was added.

District Court

On October 1, 1879, due to the Courts Constitution Act, the name was changed to the Groß-Umstadt District Court, the allocation to the district of the newly established Darmstadt District Court and the incorporation of the places Frau-Nauses and Wiebelsbach, which previously belonged to the Höchst District Court, into the district of the now District Court. When a district court was established in Dieburg at the instigation of the Grand Ducal Ministry of Justice with effect from July 1, 1905, Altheim, Dieburg, Groß-Zimmer, Klein-Zimmer and Münster were separated from the district of the Groß-Umstadt court and assigned to the new Dieburg court .

On July 1, 1968, the district court Groß-Umstadt was repealed, which from then on only functioned as a branch of the district court Dieburg . On July 1, 1970, this branch was finally closed.

building

The district court building (today: Georg-August-Zinn-Straße 44) was built in 1879. It is a voluminous, angular building with two floors in the classicism style . The house represents the beginning of the ensemble of Wilhelminian-style buildings in Carl-Mierendorff-Straße. It is also significant for reasons of building history. Therefore it is a listed building . The facade is structured in a cubic manner by strongly protruding corner risalites , which are crowned by flat gables and provided with plastered corner cuboids. The windows and the front door are covered with beautiful sandstone.

The representative listed building of the district court was sold by the country to the city in 1994 for the equivalent of a good 500,000 euros and used by the city administration. In 2009/2010 it was renovated for more than 2 million euros.
