Location of Hering in Otzberg
|
Hering is part of the Otzberg community in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse and has around 950 inhabitants.
geology
Hering was the smallest town in Hesse until it was incorporated . It is located at an altitude of about 300 to 368 meters on the Otzberg , on which the fortress of the same name stands. The mountain is the remaining basalt cone of an extinct volcano, whose eruptions once created the geological conditions for the extremely fertile environment.
The place Hering consists of the old town , which emerged from the Burgmannensiedlung and the newer part of the town that extends to the road to Zipfen / Nauses. The old town was formerly walled and enclosed the serpentine path to the castle gate. There are still a few Burgmannenhöfe there, but also denser buildings. The suburb is characterized by farms and single-family houses used for agriculture. Overall, Hering has a village-like appearance. Some holiday homes were built south of the climatic health resort.
history
The history of Herings is closely linked to the fortress on the mountain, the Veste Otzberg . This is already suggested by the name: Hering can probably be traced back to Höhenring. Whether this name indicates a possible Germanic or even Celtic high fortress can only be guessed because of the lack of evidence. Due to the extensive renovation of the fortress in the 16th century, there are not even traces of the medieval castle, apart from the keep. The fate of the mountain and the city can only be grasped through documents from the Middle Ages.
Like the entire region, the mountain, with its regional capital Groß-Umstadt, probably came to the diocese of Würzburg as early as the 8th century , then to the abbey of Fulda . This probably already used the Otzberg as a base for the administration of their possessions in the region. In the 12th century , the Count Palatine received the Otzberg as a fief . At that time, at the latest, the massive expansion of the castle began. In the area of the outer bailey to the north, a Burgmannensiedlung was built called Hering. In this context it should be mentioned that today a distinction is made between Otzberg as the name of the castle and the mountain and Hering as the name of the settlement. In the vernacular, however, one also comes across the term herring for the mountain and the castle. A document from 1332 mentions the temporary sale of the castle by the Palatinate to the Lords of Frankenstein, and in 1374 the castle and town were pledged to the Counts of Hanau. In the meantime the Burgmannensiedlung had apparently received city rights. The actual granting of city rights is not documented, but Hering, first mentioned in 1322, is mentioned as a city in many documents : 1374 Heringes die stat , 1427 Herynges daz konstantlin , 1524 Herings .
During the Landshut War of Succession (Bavarian Feud) , the castle was taken by Hesse in 1504 and by Bavaria in 1522. In 1526 it was formally handed over to Hesse by the Emperor , but the Palatinate kept the castle until after the Thirty Years War . In 1647 the Veste Otzberg was taken by the French Marshal Turenne . In 1803 the castle and town became formally and definitively Hessian . Administratively, Hering belonged to the Otzberg Office until 1820 , which from 1806 belonged to the Starkenburg Province of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .
The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Hering in 1829:
»Hering (L. Bez. Dieburg) city; lies on the northern side of the Otzberg, 3 St. from Dieburg and 1 1 ⁄ 4 St. from Umstadt. Hering has 73 houses and 478 inhabitants, including 308 Reform., 153 Catholic and 17 Lutheran, as well as 23 farmers, 21 artisans and 16 day laborers. The church is communal; however, there are 2 parsonages. - The name is derived from Höhering, because the wall or ring around the height was here. Hering was a fiefdom of Fulda Abbey, and was pledged to Hanau for 9 years in 1374, and in 1390 sold by Abbot Friedrich to Prince Ruprecht's parents. At this time the place already appears as a town. Hering came to Hesse from the Palatinate in 1802. «
In Meyer's Konversationslexikon (1888) it is written about Hering:
“Hering, city in the hess. Starkenburg province, Dieburg district, at the foot of the Otzberg, on which there is a permanent mountain castle (formerly a state prison, now uninhabited), with (1885) 463 mostly Protestant residents. "
Territorial reform
On December 31, 1971, Hering voluntarily merged with five other previously independent municipalities to form the municipality of Otzberg as part of the regional reform in Hesse . For the six formerly independent municipalities, local districts with local advisory councils and local councilors were formed according to the Hessian municipal code. Lengfeld became the seat of the municipal administration.
