The Otzberg is 367.9 m above sea level. NHN high extinct volcano in the front Odenwald , on which the place Hering, a district of the municipality Otzberg , as well as the fortress Otzberg is located.
Veste Otzberg
The Otzberg is crowned by the Veste Otzberg, which was first mentioned in 1231. The fortress Otzberg was probably built towards the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century.

The Otzberg is located in the northern front Odenwald in the municipality of the same name Otzberg in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district . Rising above the surrounding area by 130 to 200 m, it represents a widely visible mark in the northern Odenwald and Reinheimer Hügelland . To the north it slopes down towards the flat Dieburger basin.
geology
The Otzberg volcanic cone consists of nepheline basalt, which contains olivine and also labradorite . Due to its geomorphological history as an extinct volcano, columnar basalt and other volcanic rocks come to light.

Protected areas
On the Otzberg there are the natural monuments "abandoned column basalt quarry" and the "area around the Otzberg". On the lower north-west slope, the loess cave "Hinterer und vorderer Kuhgraben" and "Extension Hinterer Kuhgraben" are protected as natural monuments.

From Veste Otzberg you can see as far as Frankfurt am Main and the Taunus in good weather .
The Alemannenweg , a 144-kilometer-long hiking trail, runs as a circular route from Erbach via Bensheim-Auerbach , Frankenstein Castle and the Veste Otzberg back into the Mümling valley to Michelstadt-Steinbach . There are many cultural and historical sights on the Alemannenweg.
