The Alemannenweg is a quality and main hiking trail (HW 71) of the Odenwald Club in the Vorderen Odenwald and on the Hessian Bergstrasse .
The path is 144 kilometers long and leads over heights and through valleys of the low mountain range in the Odenwald in southern Hesse and along the Upper Rhine Rift . Mixed deciduous forest , orchards , fields and vineyards shape the landscape.
The Alemannenweg leads as a circular route from Erbach via Bensheim , Frankenstein Castle and Otzberg Castle back into the Mümling valley to Michelstadt-Steinbach . There are many cultural and historical sights on the Alemannenweg. It can be walked clockwise and in the opposite direction.
In September 2008 the Association of German Mountain and Hiking Associations awarded it for the first time as a “Quality Trail Hikable Germany”. Initially it was 138 kilometers long and its start and finish point was in Michelstadt-Steinbach. Later the starting point was moved to Erbach and the route of the first stage was changed to Reichelsheim. Therefore, the total length of the Alemannenweg is 144 kilometers today. The criteria for the award as a predicate hiking trail include: a. a high proportion of natural paths, user-friendly marking, a varied landscape and a high potential for adventure.
