Ohly Tower on the Felsberg

The Felsberg is a mountain in the Odenwald and is 514  m above sea level. NHN to the highest elevations in the Vorderen Odenwald . He is close to Reichenbach on the border of the circle mountain road to the Darmstadt-Dieburg in Hesse and by his Felsenmeer and Ohlyturm known.

geography

location

The Felsberg is located in the Bergstrasse-Odenwald Geo-Nature Park . Three municipalities have a share in its mountain range: A small part in the west is in the Hochstädten district of the city of Bensheim . The northern slope is part of the Balkhausen district of the Seeheim-Jugenheim community . The southern slope with the sea of rocks and the Ohly Tower near the summit is located in the Reichenbach district , the east is part of the Beedenkirchen district . Both localities are part of the Lautertal community .

In a westerly direction, the landscape leads from Felsberg through the Hochstädter Senke to Melibokus ( 517.4  m ). The valley of the Lauter lies at its feet in the south and that of the Modau surrounds it in the east and north . Beyond the Lautertal rises the Krehberg ( 575.7  m ) in the south-southeast and the Neunkircher Höhe ( 605  m ) in the east beyond the Modau valley .

Forest roads lead from the Kuralpe in the north and from Beedenkirchen in the east to the summit and the restaurants located there. Due to its central location between the Rhine-Neckar and Rhine-Main metropolitan regions , the Felsberg area is a popular excursion destination.

geology

The rock of the Felsberg consists of quartz diorite , which belongs to the group of granitoids and consists of the minerals feldspar, hornblende, pyroxene, quartz and other minor minor components. On the mountain flanks, wool sack weathering resulted in numerous rock heaps , which are colloquially called rock seas. The best known is the Lautertaler Felsenmeer on the south-eastern slope of the mountain.

Natural allocation

The Felsberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Odenwald, Spessart and Südrhön (No. 14), in the main unit Vorderer Odenwald (145) and in the subunit Melibocus-Odenwald (145.0) to the natural area Felsbergmassiv (145.03). The natural area, which culminates in an approximately 1000 m long mountain ridge rising from the southwest to the northeast , is 10.70  km² . Neighboring natural areas are: Lower Modautal (Mühltal) (145.07) in the north-northeast, Upper Modautal (145.06) in the east, Lautertal (145.05) in the south and Hochstädter Senke (145.02) in the west.

Ohly Tower

The Ohly Tower, a little south-southeast of the mountain summit, a 27 m high observation tower made of granite, is the landmark of the rock mountain. It is considered a particularly striking example of the romanticizing historicism of the 19th century, whose models were medieval castles and other defensive structures. The tower is registered as a cultural monument. The tower is named after the former Lord Mayor of Darmstadt , Christian Karl Albrecht Ohly . The tower was initially built from wood in 1891 by the Darmstadt section of the Odenwald Club. Today's stone tower was built according to plans by Darmstadt architect Georg Scherer and inaugurated on October 6, 1901.

The Ohly Tower has been in disrepair for a long time and can therefore not be entered. It was unexpectedly acquired by a British investor in 2007 and should be open to the public again after renovation work. There is a transmission tower near the observation tower in the direction of the mountain peak .

Protected areas

On the south- eastern slope of the Felsberg lies the Felsberg near Reichenbach nature reserve ( CDDA no. 81649; designated in 1972; 1.679  km² in size) and the approximately extensive fauna-flora-habitat area Felsberg near Reichenbach (FFH no. 6218-301; 1, 6789 km²); the latter is a Natura 2000 area. In view of the more than 100,000 tourists who visit the sea of rocks in the protected areas every year, the coexistence of nature conservation and tourism turned out to be problematic. There are no special usage restrictions for the north-western flank of the Felsberg.
