The Odenwald, Spessart and Südrhön area , also known as the Hessian-Franconian mountainous region , represents a 5854.4 km² group of natural spatial units within the south-west German layer level state and extends over the federal states of Baden-Württemberg , Bavaria and Hesse . The 3rd order Greater Region has the code number 14 ( Handbook of Natural Spatial Structure of Germany , 1950s ff) or D55 ( BfN 1994) and consists of the orographically separated landscapes of Odenwald , Spessart , Südrhön and Büdinger Wald .
While the two first-mentioned landscapes represent well-known low mountain ranges with (smaller) older basement parts , the southern Rhön forms a red sandstone border that falls in height around the - well differentiated - south of the Rhön , the Büdinger Forest in an analogous manner on the Vogelsberg .

Structure according to LfU
In the 2000s, the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU) carried out an inland, somewhat coarser breakdown of the main units concerned, which did not pay particular attention to the individual sheets. The outer boundaries of the main units differ from those of the individual leaves only in details. The subunits are differentiated by trailing letters; Since some of them are not simply connected, they were differentiated again by trailing numbers, which follow the order of the paths in the LfU shp file, but which had no explicit numbers and names:
- 14 Odenwald, Spessart and Südrhön
- 140-A Neustadt - Gemündener Saale Valley (37.59 km²)
- 140-B plateau of the Südrhön , 4 segments:
