Südrhön is the name of the area that connects to the south of the actual Rhön . Orographically it can be viewed as a southern continuation of the Rhön, but geologically it can be viewed as an eastern continuation of the actual Spessart (the sandstone spike). In terms of nature, it is combined with the Odenwald and Spessart.

Location and demarcation

The Südrhön extends south of the basalt cones of the Hohen and Kuppenrhön to the Main near Gemünden . From the Spessart in the west it separates the valley of the narrow sense from Sterbfritz in the north , then the valley of the sense . In the east, the border to the Werra-Gäuplatten is vaguely defined, but can be roughly identified from the Els valley to Wechterswinkel . The border to the grave field is drawn first in a southerly, then in an easterly direction to the Streu confluence with the Franconian Saale . Then the Wern-Lauer-Platten borders up to the Main . In the north only east of the Saale and the Lauer , after Münnerstadt in non-linear demarcation on the Saale near Bad Kissingen . Afterwards, always including the valley of the Franconian Saale, the boundary runs to Weickersgrüben . There the border is drawn south to the Wern , which is then the border to the Main.

Natural structure

The main unit group is structured as follows:

geology

The Südrhön is characterized by weakly broken plateaus on the Middle and Upper Buntsandstein , in the south also by terrain with a stronger relief on the Lower Muschelkalk . From approx. 400 to 500, sometimes even more, altitude meters in the north, the average altitude drops to 160 to 250 meters in the south on the Main and Franconian Saale . The Saale itself flows through several valley widenings at Bad Neustadt, Bad Bocklet and Hammelburg and bottlenecks with impact and sliding slopes .

Climate and vegetation

The climate is damp and cool on the border with the Hohe Rhön, becomes mild-continental towards the Neustädter Becken and the Middle Main Valley. The area is considered to be heavily forested.
